I have a Mercedes Estate which is now leaking oil when it's on an incline. I should have sold the car ages ago, but haven't got round to doing it. The car does need a service, and now this fault needs fixing. I know it will cost a couple of £100, but would it be advisable to sell it for scrap or fix and sell it?

If there are many mainstream dealers which buy the car as seen, are there any that you guys know of?

It's a 2001 C-Class CDI.

Thanks.

Fix the leak, service the car and sell it. It will be worth at least 3k unless its a nail.

Some rust around the rear arches which is common. Interior is in a good condition, and done 143k. Think I'll take the advice you have given.

Thanks :).

Bit of an update on this; took it to my local independent he's had a look and the following needs doing;

Gear box electronics, oil + filter, fix oil leak
Service B,
Brake pads/discs all round,
Front coil springs on either side are snapped,
OS/NS mirrors need replacing, NS with housing,
Footbrake needs sorting out as it sticks when parking brake is lifted,
SRS light is on,

Now I've asked him to price it all and let me know, but from what I can gather it will be either just shy of £1k or more. I'm not sure on what to do, It is due a MOT soon, and if I don't get the following done then I won't get much for it. Going by other adverts, the car could sell faultless for around the 3-3.5k mark.

normally its just the ends of the spring that has snapped and you never notice it at all.

i'd shop about for prices or just sell it spairs or repair, dont sell it to a scrap yard, or part x it in for something else

If you can afford the £1k bill, pay it,get an MOT (I'd assume you could barter this into the £1k ish job!) sell the car for £2kish (as its a tad scruffy) £1kish profit.

No?

What specifically are the symptoms for the "gearbox electronics" to need to be done?

What is specifically wrong with the mirrors? Are they smashed?

Surely you must have noticed the brake sticking and the SRS light?

I'd inspect the brakes yourself. It's a common easy money option for dealers to say they need doing when they don't. My friend was quoted £260 for his front brakes. Parts are available for 60 odd quid and it shouldn't take even a junior mechanic longer than half hour to do.

Gears were sticking in 2nd.

Mirror's aren't smashed but they are loose. They don't fold as the mechanism is broken.

I didn't until the day it went to the garage as it's been parked up inside our garage for 10 months. The SRS light IIRC, came on in the winter.

This will be done in the morning. Will be selling it as it is.
