I need some ICE

I think I want a better system than that.

You'll struggle to do much else unless you change the head unit - I think most amps connect to preouts on the head unit, which the Business pile of junk doesn't have.

Apparently the stock speakers aren't too bad and are probably a complete nightmare to change.

eek no pre out. That is rather bad news. I retract my previous statements then if you can't get the pre signal to the power amp. Bummer!

I'd curse him more for not speccing the Hi-Fi upgrades, it'd be just as difficult to improve the quality of the install with comms pack :p

My car has the sub in the rear hand rest thing much like the 350Z does, this an option? Would just mean running the wire under the seats.

You don't need a sub. With your budget, you would be better off spending more on the amp and speakers. A decent set of 6/6.5" speakers will still reproduce bass notes faithfully. Have a look at some DLS B6A speakers, then anything by Rainbow, Boston Acoustics. Then you want a two channel amp like a DLS Classic CA22. Job done, all in under £300 including cables.

I don't really see why you should need a sub for that sort of stuff. Look at proper hifi systems. They sound amazing with guitar music and do not have subs. Subs only tend to be used in hifi for AV installation (for watching films) or in hifi systems used by clubbers/dance/trance etc. However, go with your own ears at the end of the day cos you're the one who has to live with your choices and spend the money.

I listen to linken park with my newly installed sub and it sounds excellent. Can really hit the low notes that 6/7" speakers can't....

Just because someone has a sub doesn't mean they need to be a townie listening to dance music!!

I listen to a massive variety of music with success.

I agree, my sub is turned right down.

I also listen to a large variety of music.

lol :D its not the "sound" that bugs me its that whiney vocalist!!!! whine whine whine!!

I'm really tempted to sort out a sub and all that myself so i'm watching this thread with interest. Like the look of the under-seat subs.

Its not sealed, it just looks sealed. Remove the rear seat squab and all will become apparrent.

There are plenty of ICE options open to you fox. I'm not keen on the seat subs myself. Can you not get that add-on amplifier for the Business Radio. (I think Nick? has one).

Speakers are a very personal choice but its not like you can rig them up in the car until you find a set you like. Boston Acoutstics stuff is excellent and great VFM.

I'd start with a good amp and speakers then sort the sub out if you really think you need it.

I have an infinity basslink.

It's pretty small (10" and designed to be smaller than usual, with built in amp etc), and doesn't impede too much in my fiesta boot.

It's also ****** loud on full, so no worries there, but turning it down (with remote control you route to front, or HU stuff), it really makes music sound better (even stuff like Foo Fighters.) When I turn it off, it sounds as if my speakers are tin cans, but even on low it just gives enough to be able to hear the basslines properly.

Really nice.

There are plenty of head units available that don't look cheapargosminisystemish, and provide decent quality. Becker, Blaupunkt etc spring to mind. Nice plain black fascias with a range of backlight colours to suit the dash colouring

Pioneer deh 77mp is quite possibily the best looking HU of recent years, i cant remember if it does MP3 tho, should look at home in the bimmer dash imo.

Its not that so much, its more the fact that the E39 is not standard DIN size and needs a fascia adapter which looks gash.

Fox, as I've said about a million times to you, just fit a Sony sound on top amp which improves the sound quality from the stock HU a lot!

Yup. Apparently the huge problem with the business unit is the inbuilt amp. Stick in a sound-on-top amp from either Blaupunkt or Sony and there is a huge upgrade. Many people don't bother to upgrade the speakers as the standard items are actually quite good when amped.

id just get some good speakers first, you may find there output is good enough for bass.

I know a sub is miles better then that, but the newer speakers will already be miles better than your standard BMW speakers... Maybe do it in stages... New Speakers, then if you unhappy with them get the Sub?
