I need some ICE

Think we have discussed this in previous threads, I've listened to a couple of setups using those sound on top amps and they just didn't cut it in my opinion (No depth of sound and very poor range). The problem with using the line out on the original kit just means you are amplifing a bad source, you need to have good quality from the start before you start processing/amping it.

The sound on top is just a way of making the standard system the way it should be, I'm not recommending that to fox though as he clearly wants more. I mentioned those as I have one and it sounds better than an aftermarket radio with the standard BMW speaker so the potential is there.

With one of those Soundgate units he can fit whatever amp he wants to the standard head unit and they sound really good.

Can't you just get the aftermarket fascia housing and spray it to match the silver trim? I've seen in done on several installs.

That was one of my thoughts.

I can't remember what the 5's dash is like, but doesn't the silver trim run the entire length of the dash?

Out of interest, what colour is the fascia Fox?

But the silver strip above the radio flips up. Once you install an aftermarket HU, it stays flipped up.

Excuse the poor pic but from what I remember the 5 series after market fasica is this shape:-

Normally all in black with the top section indented to match the lines of the rest of the trim, you can mask off the bottom section and just spray the top.

Yeah, try this. You said you've already tried your Sony HU so this means you've got a Fascia adaptor already? Can't hurt to try a bit of DIY :p

I'm sure there is somebody on here who has a 5 series and has used an amp with the business hu???

Personally, i'd just start with an amp for the business unit.

It's a nightmare pulling up carpet, taking door cards off etc.

Nothing ever goes back properly too:(

It does in a BMW ;)

I personally went for the Sound on Top amp and Infinity coax speakers for the rear as well as a Infinity Basslink sub for the boot. Made a bit difference for about £200.

I did buy some front components but they proved to be an absolute mare to fit, so I gave up and flogged them on eBay.

Heres mine with a DEH 77MP.. I think it looks alright but no doubt most will disagree, in fairness its more of a tool than an ornament. Great unit aswell.

Im sorry, but that looks awful. I can see why someone would be reluctant to bother with this. Is there not an alternative, upgraded, BMW head unit? Or is that just ridiculously expensive?

For the components I'd recommend some high end Infinity or Focal speakers. Truely wonderful sound production.

But I'm concerned that the standard headunit will hold the sound quality back. :(

Replace the speakers before you condemn the OE head unit mate, you may be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Exactly what I and plenty of others on various sites have said several times.

If only I could actually find a sound on top amp.

That's not a 77MP is it? The 77MP is the really classy looking one with the brushed aluminium front. Yours looks more like a P55.

Aside from that, I didn't know the fascia adapter looked that bad. Why it doesn't actually fit in the slot where the standard stereo goes is beyond me, therefore leaving the little compartment above it!
