Hey Guys,

I currently am using a wireless router and I have these powerline homeplug AV plugs they are 200 mbps ones. Made by devolo. I currently have one connected to my router and then 1 in a bedroom and another 1 in another bedroom.

Then I wanted to have one in the lounge but I get no internet signal in there. I found the connection is really good in the wall socket by the stairs and wonder if it's possible. If I was to have a homeplug av in this socket by the stairs and then plug the ethernet cable coming out of the homeplug into a wireless extender.

Then could my laptop in the lounge pick up over wifi the connection? I have 802.11g wifi built in to the laptop, but wonder also If I could use a N router then the speed would be even faster right? Is this all possible?

Many thanks in advance

You can't use a 802.11g to get n speeds. You'd need to have a 802.11n wireless card. So you'd still have the g speed.

Need a quick connection to transfer your book over? Lots of pages, big file?

Stewie: How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? (voice getting higher pitched) Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah? (voice returns to normal) No, no, you deserve some time off. :o

surely I big connection to transfer those crysis screenshots?

Yes you can plug a wireless AP or router into the powerline to give you wireless, if you have a G card in your laptop and an N router you will be stuck at G speeds.

many thanks for your replies

Do you know if you can get a n card?

EDIT: oops, sorry. Forgot to mention. I have a wireless pre n router which is connected to my main PC where the home plug starts. Then if I was to get another homeplug and plug the cable end to a n router would it work or would I also need to upgrade to another n router that's connected to my PC?

It doesn't matter what the main router is, purely the link between the access point in your living room, and what's in the laptop, those both have to be N to get N speeds.

To get the laptop in the lounge working at n ish speeds the laptop needs an N card (yes they are available as usb and as laptop cards) and you need to hang off the homeplug by the stairs by ethernet cable an n conpatible wireless access point or wireless network extender. These are rare for N wireless but not impossible to find.

An N router could be made to work like an access point work but if you dont know what your doing, configuring 2 routers would be difficult. A router does far more than you need to extend your network.

As your notebook has g wireless anyway why not just try getting a g access point and see if the speeds good enough?

Theres no obvous reason why hopmeplug should not work in your lounge are you sure the plug you tested with works anywhere in your house? Is it a different make, or firmware or has differnt security settings?

Many thanks for your help

I have tried testing with all your methods, it doesn't work because my house is old. I believe the mains circuitry in the lounge does not connect to the same circuitry in the other part of the house which is the reason there is no signal.

So to start things off I need a g access point, can you recommend the cheapest and good quality one?

Many thanks in advance
