hello everyone

i am having problems with installing certain linux distros on my other pc.

1. i'm burning at lower speeds for other pc, but that didn't work
2. have tried different hdds to install to, but still same problem
3. have tried different optical drives to install from, but still same problem
4. have tried different bios settings, but still same problem

i am using blank dvd-r... could this be an issue?

could i have a failing bios on the motherboard? i have noticed some strange behaviour on the hdd controller under ahci

i get these errors on installing linux mint, Ultimate Edition, almost all distros of linux..
sometimes i get a distro successfully installed but doesn't stay stable..

the motherboard is a gigabyte ga870a-ud3 with F3 bios

i'm losing my patience with this., a don't want to throw money at this unless i have to..

would appreciate any feedback on this.

thanks in advance!!

Could it be that the DVD burner is not burning the disks correctly?
I had this with my burner. It would appear to finish the burn, the disk could be accessed in Windows but any OS I tried to install from the burned media would fail with all sorts of IO errors.

Is there any way of checking my dvd burners? i have two dvd burners on my windows pc.. I have used both of them to burn various different linux dvds

You should check MD5 sum ALL THE TIME you are going to burn ANY disk.

It depends on software you use: some of them (linux: k3b) have built-in mechanism, some of them don't and you need to download some plugin, or additional program.

If MD5 sum is correct, before click "burn", tick a "verify" option - those two things ensure you've got the same code on DVD, and ISO file.

Rest depends on errors. For example, I can't install some distros, too - so it's important to understand what error messages you receive; in my case some distro don't like RAID, and some of them are simply ALPHA, or BETA stage.

So try to pick stable release, and before install use detection tool (from DVD boot menu) to see if your hardware is compatible with that distro. You might check connections inside PC casing, because some cables (SATA, power SATA etc) might be loose.

You can make sure if your hardware is stable on the other hand - just test your mem, CPU and GPU under load - it gives you also a clue if PSU and rest of components is fine.

Don't forget linux distros do like GeForces more than Radeons, it might be one of many reasons of your troubles. BTW, do you install them on Revo3 ? :) I'm not quite sure if your linuxes are prepared in 100% for this ;-)

BTW, newest BIOS version for your mobo is F5 - upgrade it as there are updates for JMicron controller.

i understand exactly what you are saying..
I'm downloading onto my pc with 2x corsair (raided together) and then burning, with verifying enabled.

i have now lost my patience with my machine. and done an order for new bits.. mainly new m/b (same as i already have ga990xa-ud3 running fx8-8150), so i can run my 1090t on that. The old board (ga870) i will update bios on that eventually..... have an old 1055 Phenom to use when i get round to it..!

have ordered from internet both different o/s now.. through osdisc.com , so should be happy now!!.. i hope

i'm trying to install on to PhenomII-1090, 8gb ddr-13333, 500gb Wd, Radeon 6600 series and getting issues with the discs from osdisc.com... yet my ubuntu 12.10 disc went on fine... don't understand this at all!! it's not my favourite linux distro, i prefer Mint and Ultimate Edition but they won't install:confused:
i 've never had this problem before...

:cool:Great news!!!. i found what the problem was..
Now got Mint re-installed successfully in 1 atempt...

i found that under ubuntu the partition was msdos?!?. so when installing mint i created a new partition manually and formatted the drive. it also came up with "do not use partition".. i changed all that manually to ext4.. something tells me that if the partition was msdos related then it doesn't like being changed automatically. I wonder just how many other people would not bother to check this and then get frustrated when there is a failure on installing linux. an interesting thought..
now on that happy note i can put my new 2tb drive to a good use!!
