I have been thinking lately of getting an I-pad,... thinking of getting one for the little one really...(she is 5 in August) and already out growing here leap pad explorer thingy...and the wife might use it too :)

Just wondering, which one suits my needs best?

It Will be used mainly in the home for internet (shopping and news for the wife) and learning apps for the kids - oh yeah, I have a boy aged 9 too :)

I Would like the versatility of 3G (I have a 3G HTC phone, could use that sim if holidaying in UK) ?

I don't have all the money in the world, so I aint gonna buy a £600 Ipad 3 but of the myriad of offerings,
Ipad 1, 16 GB, WIFI only or WIFI & 3 G or 32 GB 3G...or
Ipad 2 16 GB WIFI only or WIFI & 3 G?

Which is best both in terms of bang for buck (performance) and versatility (16Gb going to run out of space quickly? How large are the apps??)

Sorry for noob question, but I have no real experience with Apple stuff.
;)

1st no your sim with your phone won't work as I would assume the iPad takes a micro sim
like the iPhone does.

If you are set on having an iPad that has 3G then your probably better going to get one
on contract to be honest, but that's just my opinion mate.

My son has a stack of apps on my wifes, between them they have 75 odd apps and about 10 story book audio files.

They have used between them 8 gig of 32 and I have about 12 games on there as well.

I cannot answer how much you would use 3G but I'd personally look at buying a ipad 2 off the refurb store. 16gb will likely do you unless you want to fill it mindlessly with music that you will never listen to :D

I really wouldn't bother with an ipad 1 now, the price of the 2 has dropped to almost the same from a refurb store. Don't bother second hand either, you have lost the warranty and have a used battery, from the refurb store it's a new battery. To save £40 you may as well but that than second hand.

thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah I won't fill it with music...although my little princes loves one direction...hahahah..Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Ahh....so not the Same Sim....jeez I didn't realise that...bugger...so unless 3 G is used a lot I aint gonna get the use of a seperate SIm card on contract...hmmmm looks like WIFI all the way.

Refurbs.... I have never knowingly bought such an item...I realise they have 12 months warranty...but it sort of puts me off, knowing they have been a lemon and had to be fixed...I will look at the refurb store...an off shoot of the Main Apple UK store??

There is a refurb section on the Apple site. I would agree, a refurb iPad2 sounds about the best bang/buck and don't forget to budget for a case. They are quite robust but I've seen one smash and it ain't pretty.

You should find out if you can tether from your HTC, if you can you could easily use your phones internet on the Ipad.

I wouldn't think you would use 16gb unless you plan to put tv/movies on for the kids, then go for a 32gb.

Currently iPad 2 would be best for your money, but it'd only £70 more for the new iPad and it won't lose it's value for a long time unlike the 2. 3G sim can be had from a giffgaff (O2 essentially) for about £5 a month.

I believe 3 do pre paid sims on Amazon as well that works out for something like £5 for 3gb or something like that?

If its only for the occasional use on 3G I would just tether your phone, otherwise go the 3G route but does bump up the cost of the iPad a fair bit.

Given the usage I would say a 16gb iPad 2 would be best.

It's about £11 for 3GB which expires 3 months after activation. This what I use in my MiFi as I don't always need a connection.

Its not just a book though! My daughter always makes a b line for them in the purple shirt shop! Lots of educational stuff can be had for them. We are thinking of buying her one around xmas time as she will be 6 then and prices would have dropped a bit more.

Just to let you know if you are buying one new the prices will not drop. Apple usually keeps the price of a product the same throughout its life. If you are going second hand however it may be slightly cheaper.

I would suggest using your phone as a wifi hotspot from its 3g and using the ipad just off the wifi. Cheaper, but less versatile.
