I have an old MOBO (Giga-byte GA-K8NSNXP)

It does have SATA ports on it

Will it take SATA 2 hard drives??

Just i read on some reviews pins had to set to change a SATA 2 drive to SATA 1.

But is this the case for all drives?? or just some SATA drives??

Also can you dual boot from a SATA / SATA 2 drive??
Cos I've tried before and it didnt work

Any help would be great cos im very confused about SATA drives

Yes. Remember however that "SATA2" isn't a standard, it's jsut a marketing name for SATA drives which can run using the 300Mb/s interface rather than the original 150Mb/s one.

Some older SATA controllers are unable to auto-negotiate the interface speed with the drive and hence the drives had to be forced to run at 150Mb/s. A lot of manufacturers use jumper blocks for this although Hitachi use a firmware based method which needs set using their Drive Feature Tool software.

It's more down to the board than the drive but some drives will come defaulting to 150Mb/s operation while some default to 300Mb/s. On the other hand there is no performance difference between the two interface speeds, the drives cannot saturate the 150Mb/s interface yet.

Yeah, no problems with doing that.
