Hi got all my stuff for my conroe build this morning at 9:30.

Had breakfast started building it at 10.

I still dont have a working computer.

I have built 1 machine before and this was an AMD XP2800 with a normal case and PSU

i have

E6600
Gigabyte DQ6 Mobo
Seasonic 600W
X1900XT PCI-e vid-card
P180 Case.

Ok the machine to me looks built it powers up does the thingy where it shows all the stuff on the computer.

First prob

Everything seemed to be going well it went through the format of the drives to install Windows Home there it started copying files and there were certain files it could not copy.
--Any suggestions why? the disk is clean and new and i can see no scratches or obvious defects with my eye.

second prob only picking up one of my DVD's (have a DVD-Rom and a DVD-RW)

I think this is because i didnt change the jumper settings, slave master etx so have disconected it for the time being.

third prob

I thought this could be causing the problems with the file copying (some form of conflict on the cable maybe) so reboot try and re install, gets to the page where you select the partition to put it on i hit a cursor key to select a drive it shuts down.

EDIT

fourth prob

Remebered when i checked in pc health check CPU temp was massive 85c+ and did see it at one check at over 100c this is with the stock fan.

I would be grateful for any advice on any of the problems.

I think that i may not have the power leads connected to the motherboard correctly.

Please help

Count Zero

Could be a faulty cable, cool. Will check that last, im more concered at the CPU temp at the moment, and the shutdowns.

For a PCIe board and the Conroe chips what conncections should you have from the PSU to the Motherboard?

Sounds like you haven't installed the heatsink properly as well, try reseating it.

If the answer is yes to this question im probly in deep doodoo :(

Is there something on the bottom of the retail heat sink to peel off before attatching it to the CPU? i had a quick look before i affixed it and it didnt look like there was so i fitted it, now im too scared to look

I would suggest removing one of the DVD drives and start again using a simple IDE - master / DVD - slave on the primary channel to get windows set up and working. You can put the other DVD back later.

Yeah i thought that too but now its shutting down on the partition select screen. So its not even getting to the point it did before.

Well, either, i took it of without realising or it atomised, but there is no horible stick plastic mess there so i looks like its not that thats the problem. :D

Thanks for the heart attack :P

however looking at the thermal compound there dosnt look to be very much on the CPU i would say there is a circle about the size of a 20p piece on the CPU it no where near fully covered.

this is quite intriguing reading! hope you havnt ****** your cpu!

So do i mate, so do i,

I dont think it is the CPU/Heatsink to be fair, i think there wasnt enough grease on it (intels fault not mine) but i think my problem is else where.

how hot does the heatsink feel when the temperature reading goes up to 80? Could be a faulty sensor causing those readings. If it's scalding, then yeah, there's something weird going on. Done any clock adjustments in the BIOS?

No not changed anything in the bios, though i am trying to find what the deafault settings should be on *** conroe E6600

Should i have a power thing plugged into this?

Its labeled as a PCIE_12V in the MOBO book but it just says use it if you need it (but dosnt say if you might need it)
