this is quite intriguing reading! hope you havnt ****** your cpu!

So do i mate, so do i,

I dont think it is the CPU/Heatsink to be fair, i think there wasnt enough grease on it (intels fault not mine) but i think my problem is else where.

Looks OK, tbh, judging from the pictures.

I didn't realise the capacitors were so close to the slot in the DS4. Reckon a Scythe Ninja will fit over it? Sorry for hijacking the thread.

how hot does the heatsink feel when the temperature reading goes up to 80? Could be a faulty sensor causing those readings. If it's scalding, then yeah, there's something weird going on. Done any clock adjustments in the BIOS?

No not changed anything in the bios, though i am trying to find what the deafault settings should be on *** conroe E6600

Should i have a power thing plugged into this?

Its labeled as a PCIE_12V in the MOBO book but it just says use it if you need it (but dosnt say if you might need it)

Was there a thermal pad on the base of the heatsink? Or did it come with a tube/syringe of thermal paste?

It looks like you've applied silicon thermal paste, but stock intel coolers usually have a square thermal pad attached. If you put paste over the pad, that would explain the high temps.

Maybe someone with a stock conroe cooler can tell you if it comes with a pad or not?

It also looks like you used a lot more than half a grain of rice worth of paste, it seems very thick on the heatsink.

Arctic silver looks like this when the heatsink is removed:
