I really want a PSP...but is it worth getting one?

I'm not usually the sort of person to ask these things as I'm usually capable of making my own decisions and I hate people asking "Is [insert item here] worth it?", but I'm a bit stuck with this one so I'm going to make an exception.

I've been really taken in by the look of the Vibrant Blue one, but I simply don't know if it's worth the outlay. There seems to be games/franchises that I'd be interested in (Ratchet & Clank, Wipeout, MGS etc) but are the games actually any good? I have a PS3 and see the PSP updates on the PSN store sometimes and there seems to be some quite appealing things added, is this actually the case or am I likely to be disappointed? Incidentally, what sort of connectivity with the PS3 does it offer?

Of course, the other thing I could do is spend half the money on a pre-owned PSP instead, but that takes away a lot of the appeal for me I think so I don't know if it's a route I'd take.

In any case, I think I'm just looking for some opinions/experiences from people who own one, and maybe some recommendations/suggestions on games that I might want to look at. Ironically I have no actual use for a PSP in terms of travelling or being away from home for long periods of time, but I've never owned a handheld so the novelty is there anyway.

Thanks for any help/advice/opinions/comments. :)

I would say if you spend time on public transport or away from home then a PSP is a great purchase. I have a PSP that i only really use when i go away from home, but having a PS3 is another good reason to have a PSP. The remote play is very useful playing PS1 games on your PSP is pretty cool. As for games there are loads of good games on the PSP and a few great ones. It also looks like the future of the PSP for the next 12 months is very rosey, with the next "proper" MGS game, new Resident evil game and of course GT PSP.

That is pretty much the bottom line really. I had one, and actually did like it, but it spent too much time collecting dust because I never really found myself in enough situations to warrant taking it with me. Plus, it's an expensive piece of gear to be carrying around in your pocket (although I guess the same could be said for things like iPhones / mp3 players). The PSP itself though is very good and I loved mine, but alas it just wasn't used enough.

I got one recently just for GT PSP, not many games worth having that I can see. Playing through GTA Vice City at mo, great game.

At the end of the day they're not that expensive, just take the plunge.:D

I just picked a 2nd hand one up from here for £60 quid, really impressed with it, some great little games

Useful for the train or gaming when the GF is watching Eastenders

I used to be of the same opinion but there are some great games on the PSP that aren't on other platforms, or on platforms I don't have, I enjoy giving a blast of Stardust Portable even when I'm sat at my computer desk, where I could be playing better looking games. I also take it with me wherever I take my laptop bag.

It's nice just to be able to crack it out and play a quick game of something or a more in depth game like force unleashed etc...

I've had a PSP for around 3 years and I can say that from personal opinion if you do a lot of traveling on public transport or you spend a while away from gaming PC's or consoles then it's a worthy purchase, although if you live in Liverpool, London or Birmingham you're likely to have it taken from you by somebody who tucks their tracksuit into their socks.

For me however It's no good because I don't catch buses or trains, and don't spend that much time away from home. That said, the games are definitely entertaining, there's a fairly sizeable catalogue of games and being able to just hit the power button, and then turn it back on later and resume play is a nifty trick. If I was about to buy a PSP though I'd wait until the PSPGo! was released, although that does depend on wether you like owning physical copies of games or wether you are happy simply possessing the download. :)

How long does the battery last on the 3000? Looking at getting one of these for my flight to the US next mont.

I used 35% of my battery flying from Gatwick to Charlotte, SC with my PSP2000. Total flight time was 9 hours plus 1 hour usage at the terminal. I was however using a CFW, underclocked PSP, screen off and only listening to music.

Lol fair enough...I've got a standalone MP3 player so my usage will be purely gaming/video.

Still, that's considerably better than a lot of people say you get in terms of battery!

I'm thinking of getting one at some point. Remote play is a big selling point for me and there's a few games about that are exclusive to the system that I'd like to give a shot. Plus they're so cheap to pick up second hand now!

Anyway, got a 3000 today with Lego Batman (came in the pack which was £20 cheaper than the 3000 alone!), and MGS:Portable Ops. Also bought a 4gb memory stick for FF7. Loving it so far, really nice bit of kit and the screen is stunning!
