I.T Folks - Help with being on call

For those hours I would get £220 per week and then overtime rates for hours worked

this is based on on call rates of £4.17 an hour in week and £5.85 an hour at weekends, Bank holidays and Bank Holiday weekends are £9.18 p.h.

I do on call 1 in 4 for 5pm-9am and weekend, on call rate for this is £641 per week

I also pick up a few midweek nights for 1 specific customer which pays £67 per night, won't do more than 1 in 4 weekends though

I'm oncall 1 week in 4 and get £300 for it and then overtime if I get called.

I can get called anytime 24/7 tho although its usually unlikely to get a call apart from Sat morning.

Is this reasonable do you think?

Ah, yes, worked hours get claimed as overtime. It's only on-call whilst not working I was meaning.

That's a surprise to me. It's mostly union-driven so I thought it would be similar.

Now that I think of it though, the teams nearest you are on less because of their TUPE conditions. They have the option of switching T's & C's but would lose other benefits if they did.

It's not a surprise to me, different sides of the fence remember!!! Hopefully it won't be too long, I have an application in for another part of the company which should means I'd get looked after better!

I used to get £200 a week then time and a half weekdays/double time weekends if there were any calls.

Reason for the relatively low amount was that there was simply hardly ever any calls, could quite easily go a week not getting anything.

Wasn't much hassle for me as I don't drink, and it wasn't the type of place where if the phone went you had to do it all there and then if you were busy apart from extreme circumstances.

Hilly, OT but are you an Aspire person? :)

I am Ev0 yes, been with ASPIRE now for erm, nearly 6 years!

Your self?

I'm on call 1 week out of every 5 24/7. I don't deal with customers though, only problems with the companies platform.

My company is generally quite good, if I have been up most of the night I take the morning off. If i've been up for consecutive nights I just have a day off.

Ours is factored in to our salary already but if someone does call (which is rare) we get paid our standard rate for fixing it. Luckily the phone is only active between 10pm and 6am and 99% of staff are at home during these times.

Ops security stuff on a pub sector account for now, based at either home or Toltec when I go into an office :)

Yeah seems good so far, been relatively impressed with the recruitment process, all went far too smoothly :p

Should get me where I want to be....

We do flat £200 for the week you are on call regardless if any problems or not. Reason being people could "break" stuff to earn extra money.

The on call time is from 6pm when everyone leaves the office until 9:30am the next day when we are all back at our desks - all day weekends. The week is Tues PM to Tues AM following week to take account of Bank holidays.

On Call is only about remote work as it Linux SysAdmins, no actual traveling. Just the expectation you can get to a keyboard within 30mins of the problem being reported and be sober.

I get £200 a week plus £100 for every new issue I have to deal with. By the sounds of things that's quite low, but in reality I only get called about once or twice a year so it's easy money. Plus it's an extra £400 in my pocket every month

Guys

Let’s say for example my company wanted me to be on call from -

Monday - Friday - 5PM > 8:30PM

Saturday - 8:30AM > 8:30PM
Sunday - 8:30AM > 8:30PM

It would be to provide a helpdesk / remote assistance to resolve the issue or pass onto the relevant hardware support desk. What kind of money do people generally earn to be on call like this?. I’m guessing you would get an "on call" fee and then you would get paid per call answered / dealt with.

Cheers

Okay, as an example my companies pays £32 per 12 hrs oncall, £70 per 24 hrs for a Sat or Sun, £80 for pucblic holiday. For those hours we are expected to be able to answer the phone and respond to text messages immiediately and if required, log in to our secure network from our home address within 15 minuites. If we cannot resolve this issue from home we are expected to attend from the office.

I cover 16 hours on a weeknight and 24hrs per Sat/Sun so that's (16/12)*32 = £46.66 per weekday and £140 per weekend totalling £353 a week.

Callouts are dealt with as overtime at time and a half subject to a 3 hr min, 1hr bounus if the callout last more than 2 hours and only one callout per 3 hr period, so for example:-

Called 21:00, worked for 5 mins - 3hrs callout @ time and a half - 4.5hrs overtime.
Called at 22:30 same night, worked five mins - no payment as within 3hrs of the above call.
Called out at 2am, worked for 2.5hrs, 3hrs callout + 1hrs bonus - 6hrs total overtime.

Any callout within 3 hrs of normal start and end time is counted as normal continuation of the day and added to flexi - i.e. normal end of day 17:00, called out @ 19:00, 5 mins work - 2hrs5mins added to flexi (difference between 19:05 and 17:00).

Hope that helps.

Exactly, luckily you're now in a company which is massive, gives plenty of scope to be moved around if required! :)

Good luck!
