Hi there, recently i have been having problems with my laptop mainly when starting up Windows Live Messenger...

It all started back on tuesday 30th august when i was in a video call and the whole laptop was freezing, not just the msn window, every few seconds (which is not normal) then the sound of the other person through the video call stuttered and my laptop screen changed to show a blue screen with the white writing on...stupidly i pressed and held the power button to turn it off without writing down any error numbers/codes, however i do remember it saying something about "something_index.sys". I'm kicking myself because i cannot remember the word before the "_index". Anyway, i then turned it back on and tried to go into safe mode which did nothing but go to a black screen and back to the first loading part of the start up showing the manufacturer logo and a loading bar. I decided to let it start up and i logged in fine with no problems and did a virus scan immediately which found nothing. So i thought to just carry on doing what i wanted to do which was to go on Windows Live Messenger. I clicked it to bring it to the sign in screen and i clicked sign in and normally the sign in loading part would take no more than 6 seconds but this was taking a long time so i clicked the close button and the whole computer went slow and crashed for about 20 seconds and everything i tried to do would not load or close so i held the power button to turn it off again. The problem only seems to happen when i click the sign in button and after that it will crash for a bit and work very slow. Oh almost forgot, i have also done a Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool (think its called that) and a startup repair and both found nothing apart from the startup repair suggesting to try a full factory setting reset which i cancelled obviously. I have also done all of the Malwarebytes scans which found nothing as well.

I will be very grateful for any comments or help anyone can offer me!

And also sorry if this is in the wrong area!

Dont sound like a virus. They very rarely crash a computer as theres no point in that, they normally spy on you or collect personal info, or use your computer to send out spam emails amongst other things.

As said above i'd uninstall MSN and re-install it, and also uninstall anything new that you've recently put on. If that dont work try a system restore to a earlier date before this happened.

Thanks for the replies. Yeh i have tried both repairs and uninstall-reinstall's several times to msn with no luck...for a system restore, would i need a backup because i dont have one...

No worries guys! I got a check disk to run several times at startup and it finally found bad clusters and other stuff and now as soon as i click sign in on msn, it loads up just like it was before...thanks for your help guys, i got really stuck with this one!

Its a good feeling when you thought your laptop was on its way out but actually it was only a "small" problem
