Just recieved a 3850 earlier today from the MM, removed the cooler to see what paste was being used and if it needed replacing and a load of washers fell off. I put them back on where i thought theyd fell from, but when i put the card back in and fired it up, i got a lovely burning smell, so i pulled the plug (power on to power off time was about 10 secs). I suspect i put the washers on the wrong side so that the cooler wasnt making contact with the chip, so i took it off once more (the paste has gone a bit yellowy, but the heatspreader seemed fine), removed the washers completely, rescrewed it, and shone a torch in between to see if it was making contact.

i put it back in the motherboard, powered it on, and the fan wouldnt spin, no heat was coming from around the chip area and (surprise surprise), no signal on the monitor.

any chance the oven trick would work?

sorry RomeoS...

I like taking things apart but you'd have been best to look online for instructions about disassembly.

That really does suck, I'm sorry mate.

Ahhhh noooo my lovely uber clocking 3850 :( RIP faithful old card :(

edit

I used a fresh blob of AS5. Not much use now but also ran FurMark on the card overnight to make sure you got it good and working :(

annoyingly theres nothing that looks wrong. Like i siad, the paste was a little odd coloured after the incident, but once i wiped it off, the surface of the chip looked fine, theres nothing out of the ordinary on the backside either. Ive taken it out now, and ill try it again in the morning. Failing that, its oven time. Failing that, time to save up the pennies for a 5770.

edit: in my vain attempts to get it going again, i noticed it was making a very faint ticking noise

right, well ive tried a fair few combinations and i think i can safely say the card is dead. I also think its done something to my motherboard, as it now takes 3-4 attempts to boot (however, ive been running prime for about an hour and its still stable...)

so, i wrap it up in foil but with the gpu still exposed, preheat the oven to ~210, stick it in for 5 mins and season to taste?

right, well seeing as no one confirmed these settings, ill pop it in it at that and if it all goes horribly wrong, ill put some pics up of roast hd3850.

well, i unwussed out and went through wth it. Result? absolutely nothing has changed. Still looks fine (no spectacular explosions or anything worthy of posting pics), still get nothing but a faint ticking when i plugged it back in.

I only ever managed to get 10 minutes of GRID on it :( what a sodding waste of 30 quid.
