I've never been able to use a period in the SSID on any router I've used.

Really? I've had Netgear, Belkin, Linksys and all have been fine with "." usage, my SSID is just my domain name.

I have a 2nd Guest network I can enable too but no idea what to put for its SSID...hmmmm.
