Im sure some of you remember my frazzling of a recently purchased 3850 about 2-3 weeks ago due to not putting the cooler on correctly. Now the time has come where i got myself employed, paid and got a one month old 5770 off the MM.

Long story short - Great card, stupidly high FPS, but the temps are through the roof. Idling with 30% fan (auto) gets me 70.c. Idling with 100% fan (manual) gets me 62. After 3 laps of GRID it was 95.c

seeing as this card cost me significalty more than the 3850, i would prefer not to frazzle this one as well. Sooo ... help?

No, i havent messed around with the cooler this time. Yes, i have got decent airflow. The card in question is a HIS one

hmm ... i tightened the screws on the cooler. ARMA is giving a tad over 80.

using catalyst and AOD. They both say morealess the same thing :/

might need the cooler resteating...does the fan actruly work...it shouldn't be that high

5770 is a very cool running card with the stock cooler, this one has an even better after market cooler on, temps should be well under 70c max load, and the idle temps smack of dodgy HS seating or incorrectly applied paste, if you're not going to RMA then I suggest you take the HS off and apply some fresh paste and make sure the HS is seated properly.

Yeah it should in the 60 ~ max at most, and thats not taking into consideration your running 100% fan speed. You should be seeing 30 ~

done, and no difference.
Ill see what the seller has to say, then ill have a go at RMA (hes given me a copy of the reciept so i reckon this was either an honest mistake or my system just dont like the card)

edit: just for clarification, apart from the 100% idle test, ive left the fan an auto. I cant hear it spinning up much under load. (becomes audilble at around 50% when playing around with manual)

Well, the 5770 that Anandtech tested hit 77C:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/172

And I do remember members mentioning their 5770 reaching over 80C, so may be it is hit or miss depending on brand, cooler and voltage used. But it shouldn't be normal to reach that high temp with that kind of fan speed...

May be the previous owner messed with the thermal paste and didn't have it applied properly?

RMA?

cant help but notice it seems to stick at 668mhz core, coincidentally the same speed as the 3850. I did reinstall CCC when i first put the card in, but could there be some old driver buggery going on here?

I think so.
I tested at 990Mhz core and 5800Mhz RAM, wasn't even close to the temps you have. Not 100% sure of the fan speed but it was running silent.

It might worth running with a few other drivers.

AOD reports a core voltage of 1.2v.
a) is this the right voltage?
b) are 5770s voltage adjustable?

edit: update. had the cooler off, there was a small plastic frame/border around the chip packaging. When i was doing the paste, i assumed this was there to keep the cooler level or something to that description. This time ive taken it off and it has helped a lot. Its now idling at 51.c auto fan, and a quick run of furmark topped it out at 90.

One odd thing ive noticed. I downloaded MSI afterburner (to see if i could tweak the voltage, but alas :( ), and started using that to monitor. Seems the core/mem clocks work correctly, untill i open up CCC, which they then revert to 668/730. The plot thickens...

Not sure about the HIS cards but 1.2 is about right.

Just noticed your Core and Mem speeds are really low. Did you alter them ?

ok, update.

two things:
1. CCC is making the clocks go funny (ie, 668/730 not 850/1200). Running afterburner without CCC installed shows that the card runs at proper clocks and throttles to 2d clocks properly. Why, i dont know. thoughts?

2. Had the cooler off. There was a small plastic frame/border around the chip packaging. When i was doing the paste i though it might be for keeping the cooler level or something. This time i took it off, and it helped a lot. atm its idling at 50-55, with GRID hitting just under 80 and furmark topping out at 90. Still not great, but much better.
