not only does every new hardware part i buy never work straight off, but ive just bought bf 2142 and my dvd drive doesnt recognise it!

my computer says i have a cd drive and a dvd drive, i only have one drive, and it says both are empty.

One of my old dvd drives stoppped playing certain originals after a while, might be worth you trying a firmware update on it.

I have that problem with DDO in my DVD rw drive, usally need to take it out give it a quick clean on my trouser leg and pop it bac in, even though there isnt a scratch on it.

Right Click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers

You should have at least 4 things listed (if your setup's anything like mine):
Primary IDE Master
Primary IDE Master
Secondary IDE Master
Secondary IDE Master

Go into the properties of the one that is your cd drive (hopefully you can figure this out - else just keep trying it for one at a time) and set transer mode's to PIO. This has sorted it out for a friends machine with BF2 before
