Help... somehow.

In windows (vista 32) it says its a WD 350gb scsi drive... its sata.

Anyway, its starting whirring a lot, the hdd light is constantly flashing, sometimes itll go dead silent and idle, but more so its busy reading/active and making noise.

Ive run a few check disks, wd diags etc and all come back fine. However O&O chkdsk says theres an error. Also noticed in windows performance monitor the write speed goes to 100% whenever it does something. HDTACH doesnt work in vista, so is there anything else that I can use that will go "yes theres a problem" or "shut up its just a bit noisey".

I cant remember it ever being this loud when its active ( i like a quiet pc) and its getting irritating now.

oh bum :/

hmmm, looking like im going back to xp. Exams are over and im playing games again. Vista is getting more and more annoying by the moment :)

Saying that it is a SCSI drive isn't anything to worry about, sometimes Windows doesn't differentiate between the two.

You could try Speedfan to see what the SMART analysis for the hard drive says as that sometimes highlights problems. :)

installed that just but its not able to do anything in SMART tab? Nothing comes up.

You should be able to select your hard drive from a drop down menu (probably reads something like "HD0 - 250.1GB - ST......") in the SMART tab part and then that should show some values, there is also a button to "Perform an in depth analysis of this hard disk". If none of this works then chalk another one up to Vista and it knackering perfectly usable tools. :)

I'll be finding some chalk then ;)

Cheers michael, will do asap. I dont think anything on here is valuable really now, sent off all my coursework etc to college. I should be fine if it dies (had a hdd faliure before mid term, ouch.)
