I think my shutter just died, options?

Weren't we talking about this a week or so ago on IRC? I seem to remember i said it would die any time soon, but was then told i was talking rubbish :p

Have a look for a used 20D on PoTN and places like that, they appear quite often.

I don't recall saying that, but I do recall saying yesterday that my 10D had done at least 34k. Wasn't expecting it to die that night.

does 201-0106 on the file number mean ive taken 20,106? i would have expeted to get more than 30-40K of shutter use on a modern camera hope you get it sorted m8

No. 201 is the folder name usually (mine is 100 or 101 depending on Cf card) and 0106 is the pic number.

There is always an option of sequential counting, or not. The former it never resets and continues to count up and up, handy for knowing total pics, and then there is the not option which resets at every download i think.

Personally i let it count forever, that way every file automatically has a unique ref and i know the total shots from that body too.

Remember when my 20D went away. It was repaired by canon not under warrenty due to it getting wet (apparently) anyway, Claimed it on the house insurance for an excess of £50. It was then the repair estimate that was sent into the prude and they evaulated wether or not it was worth repairing or replacing. Due to my camera been just over 1k at the time of repair (and the repair cost been £320 quid) they said repair. so the insurance paid for the work to be done. Would like to know what the situation would be on a camera that is no longer in production. You might find that your excess would actaully get you a new camera anyway like a 20d. Probably wouldnt be the case but you never know. Worth looking into I would say.

Sent it off to a company today to get fixed. £200 apparently. Cheaper than a new camera. 1 week to 10 days. So I'll be getting some Ilford 3200 to shoot a gig on Friday.

Ive got the same problem - my 300D shutter broke in Yosemite park last October and I was in no position to get it repaired so I bought a 20D upgrade so I could still shoot while in the states.

Im now sat with a 300D worth maybe £300 fully working, but which will cost £150 to repair - currently its collecting dust until wither I find a way to fix it mysefl (which I have tried but given up on) or I find somewhere that fixes/supplies the shutterboxes cheap.

My insurance sounds similar to yours, they say they will pay for repairs, but after £50 excess and then to lose our household no claims - its not really worth it.

Its a real pain in the arse and makes me wonder if it isnt a ploy by Canon to get more money/upgrades out of their users :(

Hope the repair goes OK!

Stu
