I think owning an Intel for the 1st time has given me the OC bug!

As a loyal AMD buyer since the old K6-2 chip I recently went to the dark side and bought Intel. Wolfdale E8400, from an AMD x2 4800+

Whilst I realise its 3Ghz, it seriously knocks the AMD into a hat when it comes to transcoding DVD-9's to divx or Mp4 to play on the PS3.

And as for overclocking. Well! I have previously attempted to do a little light OC'ing on the AMD's but never got very far before BSOD's or failure to POST. I gave up on it feeling I was never going to part of the magic circle.

I heard that Intel are easy to OC, but I never thought it would be this easy. I just played around doing a little light OC'ing and I am now running at 3.527Ghz just by increasing the FSB to 392Mhz. Its been completely stable all the time.

I am not going to push it any higher as its on the stock fan, and I don't trust it. But I am just amazed that I got anything like an 18% OC so easily. I would have been over the moon to get something like that on AMD.

I think I have just caught the OC bug! I mean, they don't even make a 3.5Gz Wolfdale do they? And if they do, by the current pricing scale, it would be double the price what I paid! I certainly see the benefit there.

Is this the beginning of the end? How long is it until I start installing water pumps?

I was loyal intel for pentium 1234 switched to amd for the x2's now i'm going back to intel after an x2 4400 and a x2be 6400. hopfully for a quad later this year.

I however have always been an AMD man, recently got an asus commando that went **** up (off the bay for a measly £4) and it is currently with Asus, once it comes back ill be going for a Q6600!

Switched from Opty 185 to E8400 - First Intel I've ever bought after at least 10 yrs with AMD.

As you did , tried overclocking the Opty but best I could get was 2.79ghz a 7% increase.

With the 8400 went straight to 3.6ghz (400x9) with slight increase in volts - a 20% increase. And I know it will go faster.

No regrets at all - except feel a little disloyal.

BUT would rather have the faster cpu with the 'slight' feeling of disloyalty than no guilt feelings and a , much , slower chip.

Glad the OP has finally discovered core computing.

I can relate but personally loved the overall challenge of AMD's - trial and error as you coaxed a little more out of them each time. Got my Opteron 165 up to 3ghz on air (66% overclock).

That said i then upgraded to an e6600. Even at stock speed (2.4ghz) it blew the AMD away.

That chip was run to 3.4ghz but my hardest clocked chip was Devious' old golden stepping e2160. A 100% overclock @ 3.6ghz.

Ran warm but was an immense chip.

Also ran an early B3 q6600 but went back to duals as i didn't need the raw computing power. The fast dual i use now is perfectly suited to what i need - cool running and effortlessly quick.

My advice to you would be to get watercooling as soon as you can. It's not particularly scary once you've read up on it and TBH it's worth the money as most components can be re-used over and over.

With my amd 3000+ and k8vse deluxe, overclocking was always a no go but then I offered to build core 2 based systems for my friends and that's when I really got into overclocking.

Managed to oc an e4300 1.8 to 3.0ghz, a b3 q6600 to 3.4ghz, a g0 q6600 to 3.52ghz and a qx6850 to 3.8ghz.

I hope once I go core i7, overclocking will be as fun as with the core 2 duos.

Ahh i miss my opty 148 (it did 3.1 just but i always needed a bigger cooler)

Anyway core2 makes overclocking pretty simple, i got my e8200 (first intel chip in a home build since pentium days) and the stock 2.66 make my opteron look poor, then it went to 3.88 :O (yeah i never found the limits as i didnt have the time but i gave the board on to a friend to see if it can go faster...)

Op you'll only want water when some pc related noise really starts annoying you, then you'll realise its the psu.... *evil laughter*

I first had a 486, jumped to p3 500, since then I went AMD, with a Tbird 1200, 2400+, 3500+ then a 4000+, now I have a Q6600, and well impressed.
