I think I'm going to upgrade my 09 plate VRS to a new VRS but I'm torn between the petrol and diesel model. One thing I have decided is that I'm going to get an auto rather than the manual I have now. I have a 170bhp diesel at the moment but my annual mileage has gone down to about 10000. Is it going to be that much more to get a petrol and have the additionally BHP?

Bear in mind that the petrol model on the configuration tool at the moment is still the MY18 spec (or at least was last time I looked), which you'd now only get as preregistered examples. The MY19 order book isn't officially open yet but there are plenty rumours about what it will be - essentially 245bhp with VAQ diff but with a new exhaust arrangement with a GPF (gasoline particulate filter). At 10k per annum the diesel wouldn't even enter my mind. I've just done my first fill to fill average in the 245 DSG I just got and it was 40mpg, I don't personally see the value in diesel when the petrol is that efficient and significantly nicer to drive.

Yup petrol every day Of the week.

I have a very well screwed together and presented Passat estate GT with all the bells and whistles.

Only thing that let’s it down is the surprisingly rapid tractor engine at the front.

If it had a petrol equivalent it would be a much more pleasant experience

The petrol VRS sounds, feels and drives just that little bit sweeter. Especially if its the 245 version for a new one.

Not that the Diesel is bad, it's just the petrol wins out on everything but MPG (and is still V good)

Petrol. I had the same dilemma before I bought my MK3 VRS and I'm doing 15k a year. MPG is about 30 on shorter trips and mid 40s on longer trips. The petrol is better in every way apart from MPG but at 10k the difference in fuel cost isn't going to be huge.

DSG is a great call too, I had a manual MK2 facelift previously and I haven't missed the clutch and stick one bit.

There are also huge delays at the factory as well, a new order is up to a 10 months wait. That's unlikely to improve the problem anytime soon.

I like my VRS, it's a solid family car.

Why all the manual hate?
I love changing gears - I find automatics make me really lazy with my driving and I practically fall asleep, even in really slow traffic!

I've had my 2013 vRS DSG Estate for a few months now, and cant fault it at all. Lovely car to be in an drive.

The short 20 mile commute to and from work, if I drive sensibly, I can get high 30's to my best of 41mpg. Haven't taken it on a long motorway run to see what mpg it will do yet though.

Currently got a 67 plate VRS estate 230 TSI DSG got to say I love it, pano roof came in handy over our scorching summer.

Had it 3 months drove 2k averaging 39mpg.

I had a sit in one of these while I was taking a look at the Kodiaq. I was very impressed indeed. My wife doesn't want one but if it were a car just for me then I'd have been trying a test drive.

I currently have an 18 plate 230 vRS estate DSG

First DSG/Auto I have had and I have to say I love it, normal mode is tame, sport mode is quick and you have the manual paddle shift/gear shift if you want.

I seem to remember getting 45mpg on a long run, my TDCI Q3 150 Quattro only got ~50mpg on a run so I'm starting to see the petrol/diesel debate as dying now that modern petrol engines are quick and economical (add to the extra cost of diesel the cost of AdBlue and i'm sure petrol is actually cheaper for average people)

I have to admit I'm still finding it hard to find good examples.

I have however on the other hand seen a few Scirocco R DSG's which were always a second choice. I didn't realise the Scirocco had stopped production. Really loved my 140 but it didn't have enough poke.
