I thought I wanted a Octavia VRS/Scirocco R...bought an S4

Agree with the above, it's a very easy £1000-£1500 to be made from going private and these days it's hardly any hassle at all. Sold all 4 cars privately and the first person to actually come and see them bought them straight away.
Heck, with a good description and plenty of photos just stick it in on eBay with no reserve and you'll be suprised. Obviously make sure the listing ends at a decent time, etc.

Sold 2 Mazda 6s without problem to the first to view properly.

The last one I sold was "sold" 6 times on eBay with the winning bidders being nothing but idiots.
I think best place to sell is always members clubs tbh

I'm trying to decide between a new intercooler, HPFP and turbo etc for the mk5 gti (320-380bhp) or just throw the money at a 2010-2012 age S4

AWD and improved figures as standard, larger car for family holidays etc, and running costs are similar to the golf.

Nope, get the newer ones because V6 supercharged.
Stage 1 from MRC gets you 450bhp. Stage 2 MRC package gets you close to 500bhp. No matter how much nicer that v8 sounds, you can't simply ignore 50% extra power. ;)

@AHarvey - definately go for the S4. You can throw all the money at a Golf 5, but a 300+ bhp front wheel drive car is pretty sad, with traction being a huge issue even in perfect conditions in the first two gears. Wasted money if you ask me.
If you want to keep the size, decent Golf 7 R's can be now had for £16k with a bit of patience. Remaps to that 380bhp and significantly lighter (300+kg) than an S4.

As a A4 b8 owner (albeit 3.0tdi, but with adaptive suspension, decent brakes & Michelin PS4s) - do not underestimate how heavy the S4 is. Yes, they have a lot of grip because quattro, but it's a very damn heavy car which shows its weight on twisty roads.

Did someone say pics? ;)

Looks so much better now with the wheels back to as they should be:
