I was carrying a computer case and a load of tools, I think a the bit end of a drill went through the pane.

It's double glazed and only the outside pane is shattered. I'm a student living in rented accomodation, but luckily we have a nice landlady. Any idea how much this would cost to replace?

Looks expensive! Organise to have it replaced yourself rather than going through the letting agency / landlady as they will likely charge more

Why are you asking OcUK? Get the yellow pages out and do some calling!

Christ I'm a student I dunno how to do stuff like that :p!

I've dropped off an email to the landlady as she's really very good about these things. If she says I need to pay something and it's a massive amount then I might ring around.

It's not going to suddenly shatter is it and fall on the cat?

you might be lucky and get away with replacing the glass or you may need a new door. best to measure the size of the glass and start going through the yellow pages ringing companies........unless you have house insurance.

If you go directly to an industrial window manufacturer they'll probably sell you a double glazed unit. However you'll need toughened glass so the price will be slightly higher. Can't remember what we used to charge but I'd guess you should be able to get it for less than £100. At the place I worked at one of the guys would come and fit it for £50 at the weekend.

He's probably more likely to be ripped off by going through yellow pages. The agent/landlady probably already has a contact or two for doing this. They probably have insurance for it as well.

This could happen.
You need cat armour:

Unfortunately it's often the case that they are fitted as a unit so both inner and outer panes will need replacing. I would expect something on the order of £200-£300.

This. We had some double glazed windows made and the guy left the glass suppliers sticker on the window.

When I duly broke 4 panes when fitting them :o I contacted the glass manufacturer and was shocked to discover the double glazed units were only £3 to £4 each

Of course that is not safety glass but you save a packet going direct. I went back there and got a 12mm 6' x 4' toughened glass table top for £87.

I would just blag it and say you got home to find it like that, probably some kids throwing stones. Remember your the poor student and she the lucky one who owns more than one house ;)
