I updated my Time Spy score and went backwards after upgrading CPU

Hello, I am sad and confused. And have spent the entire day going in circles.

When I first got my 5090 I made this thread https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...be-expected-from-a-5090-in-time-spy.19006540/ with my Ryzen 7700

My 7900X3d arrived today and I was excited, all I can say is, NO MATTER WHAT I DO, it will not boot with two ram sticks, I have latest BIOS, and absolutely any which way I put in a second memory stick, it will not post to BIOS.

Moving on to my Time Spy score (non extreme)





So after what went on in the other thread, the most confusing thing, with my ONE stick of ram in, is my GPU score went up NOTABLY, and my CPU score went DOWN LOL

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

So upgrading my CPU, but losing a stick of RAM, and a lower CPU score than with my 7700, yet well over 48K GPU score

I'm banging my head against all four walls

I REALLY would appreciate some input

With one DIMM, you have single channel memory. This will reduce CPU performance. You do, however, now have more cores.

Ignore the synthetic benchmarks for now. Your real issue is that you can't boot with two DIMMs. That needs sorting or you'll be stuck with single channel memory.

Secondly, the 7900X3D is a dual CCX CPU. There will be a noticeable delay when the second CCX is used for gaming loads. Ensure your OS and AMD driver setup is spot on to ensure it's running at its best.

It's a huge issue and I don't know what's left to try, it will NOT post with with two sticks of RAM, any which way I try
 
Your VRAM and gpu core clocks are higher on this run which explains the gpu score increasing. Forget about Timespy and focus on your cpu booting with 2 ram sticks imo.
 
Did the old CPU boot with 2 sticks?

Maybe the new CPU is either making bad contact with the pins and needs re-seated, or you mangled a pin in the socket related to ram while doing the CPU swap?

Thank you, yes my old CPU everything was entirely normal, I switched to this 7800X3D and all hell broke loose, only one stick of RAM will allow me to even get into BIOS
 
I'd certainly be looking at re-seating the CPU, carefully inspecting the pins.

Even stuff like uneven heatsink mounting can cause the pins to compress in a weird manner and make bad contact.

If you rule all of that out then I'd be looking at it as a faulty CPU.
 
Have you tried clearing cmos? That will set your memory to it's default speed and maybe then it will work with the new cpu then you can try enabling EXPO. Memory should be installed in slots A2 and B2 so the second and fourth slots counting from the cpu. I presume you are on bios F34 looking at your screenshot and the bios date? The latest is F37b and both versions since yours say they increase memory compatibility so it may be worth flashing. Do you also have the latest AMD chipset driver which you can get from here? Sometimes a bios update requires a update to the chipset driver as well to get the most out of it. If it still doesn't work check the motherboard pins to make sure you didn't bend any.

Honestly I been at this all day, until I bought much Guiness and decided to drown my sorrows and play BFV with one RAM stick. And then I ran time spy out of sheer morbid curiosity

I don't know why my GPU score increased as I didn't change anything in that regard - other than the different CPU and ONE RAM stick.

I just ordered an ASUS ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming WiFi - if I still have the same problem I'll just send it back and try another approach - it was a rush choice, from desperation

If there's any other boards I should consider I am happy to cancel this one, depending on availability/price etc - from what I can gather it's at least an upgrade from my early revision Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX? I payed near £200 for it when it was first out...

If you've crossed off the usual suspects, it's time to check the CPU socket and its pins. You have to input a lot more effort to swap the board than check the socket - it's an easy test.

Do you have a 7800X3D or 7900X3D? If the former, you can ignore my comment about two CCXes and drivers.
 
Same happened on my MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi and it was a few bent pins that you can't really see unless you zoom in on my phone.As for the CPU score, that's a pretty normal score for a 7800X3d,I get around the same

This is what I would do:
Reset CMOS, update to latest BIOS, leave everything at stock, don't enable XMP/EXPO yet, wait until you've managed to get it to boot with two sticks.
Make sure RAM is in recommended slots for your board.
Try each stick individually and test.
Check CPU socket, look for bent or damaged MB pins closely, take picture and upload here if unsure. Check CPU contact pads for damage.

Was the CPU bought new? Could be faulty and need returning? I'd be looking at that before changing the board as everything was working before the CPU change.

I have this mobo and it's been excellent so far, but definitely send it back if the issue persists.

Do you have the old CPU to test? If so, and that still works with both RAM sticks, then it's hard to look behind the CPU being a duffer.
 
Thank you all very much

ONE of the many things I did yesterday was install my 7700 again and the same issue so I just think I busted my mobo, I will check the pins but right now, despite one stick of ram, all is working well in cinebench r23 and time spy and BFV and great performance in B06 so I'm just going to leave it all as it is, and when my ASUS boards arrives I will swap everything out and take a pic of the pins in my Gigabyte board and upload it here.

By MOST accounts, my Time Spy, and r23 multi core scores (~18200) all seem to be acceptable so my new board arrives in 2 days, I'll update then

During the 10 minute cinebench run my temps remained very stable at 81C that being said my cooler is a cheap Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE - which is pretty solid for the price but I imagine people with 7800X3d chips probably use far more impressive cooling - it was originally purchased for my 7700

It was purchased new, I can return it, right now it's just a case of replacing SOMETHING and seeing which part is buggered. Everything was working perfectly before CPU change.
