How about a VW Corrado, you dont see many of them about any more and the VR6 is ment to be fairly pacey

Think again.

I once saw a blind man beat one on a quad bike in a straight line drag at Santa Pod. No joke!

(Guaranteed to pull Billie Piper with that one!)

No, guaranteed to pull some frumpy church going girl with that one :p

My tip: Spend ages choosing and sorting insurance.

Run huge amounts of quotes with huge amounts of companies and spend days doing it.

There are certain cars out there - which provide plenty of power for minimal insurance cost. I found that Jags (XJ) and Saabs (9000) were silly cheap to insure for the performance. Not saying these are the right cars for you, but certainly something to consider. A saab 9000 aero should just be in budget, and if not a 2.3T is still quick.

In fact, family cars are generally a better bet over hatches.

Or perhaps go the otherway. Something big enough to carry a couple of mates around in. Reliable and easy to maintan. Apparently they go forever....

Or maybe a Scirocco

I quote....

I want something different.
Very different.

I'll leave everyone else to suggest something original like a golf, or a polo, or maybe an old BM. Cause that would all be so different.

He just posts stuff off Autotrader which fits the budget irrespective of whether it's reflective of the sort of thing you can actually get for the budget. We've had 'You can get a nice Cougar for that' recommendations for budgets of £1k once just becuase the cheapest one on there was a Cat D at a grand..

Isn't that pretty much what you've done with your own car though. I'm sure most people would say you couldn't of got yours for the money you paid.

Its also what I did with my car. None of my mates beleived I'd got the car I have for as little as I paid.

Plus whats with the cougar crap. If I remember rightly, the last time you went off on a rant about me it was over a ST170.

Well mine isn't a Cat D, no, but you'll note I don't recommend 530i Sport's to people wanting £7k cars becuase generally, you can't really get a good one for it and ones worth having at this budget are very rare and require a particularly good deal or somebody with more money than time on his hands to buy it from.

Kudos on the Sera recommendation though, can't believe how cheap they are now.

Get a sig Fox so i can recognise you from the rif raf :p

sera is a pretty cool car by all accounts - although you do have to "get" it - plus afaik there all imports so insurance could be a no-no :(

something a bit left-field would be a nice old volvo :D now seriously hear me out - these babys are v-cheap on insurance, and if you pick the right ones they are rwd and can be pretty pokey - used to see off boy racers in my mum's old 440 back in the day! Granted they weight a ton but i'm pretty sure you don't have to declare stipping out the interior ;)

oh and a Scirocco is a mightily underrated car - very good fun to drive hard :)

Get a capri. I hate to type this, but that's one car that actually looks good with a bodykit. Insurance for a 19 year old for a proper capri (i.e 2 litres plus) might be a bit ridiculous though.

Golf GTi 16v mk2 big bumper.
unless i've missed something the OP is 19 and unless he's earning a good living then "different" will also need to mean "reliable" and "cheapish to run".

reliability is not a big issue. One of the reasons for looking at older cars is because the engines are simpler with not much electrics etc. So i can have a good look around and learn the basics of car mechanics.

again i put the Golf forward.
engines are tough as hell...they even get faster with more miles on!!!
an uncommon site on our roads these days so different but not in an expensive way like "different" usually means.
simple to work on, all bits are easily and pretty cheaply available and should you decide you want to learn how to mod cars then just about everything has been done fo a mk2 Golf somewhere.

Well weve had a golf and a scirroco suggested so why not a corrado?

thats the 1.8 16v, you can pick decent ones up for under a grand (ive had 2 now that cost £800 each). You should find the insurance isnt too bad, especially if you join a VW/Corrado forum and go with the insurer that gives them a discount.

amazing groups out there, whenever you see another owner you get flashed, good cars to tinker with with some good technical support out there. I had one guy willing to travel 100 miles just to look one over for me. They attract quite a bit of attention as well, although everyone asks if its the VR6 one, and it seems every 40 year old wanted one :D
