I want to do something good next summer

I've heard quite a few bad things about realgap so I would do a fair bit of research before booking with them. I think the main problem is like what Volcs said that it is a complete rip-off and you could do much more with your money if you did it yourself.

I'm off travelling in January and thought about doing some tours through Cambodia/Vietnam but have since decided that we'd be better off going it alone.

I also agree with nokinidea that 4 weeks is not enought time to do Australia.

I originally planned to go there for a holiday after I finished uni but realised that it's just not enough time to do the things I wanted to do, so I scrapped that idea and am now taking a proper gap year and going travelling where I will have at least 3 months to do Oz:D

Unfortunately the maximum time i'll have is 4-6 weeks approx, no way around it unless I don't have a job secured for next September.

Fly Business Class around the world and stay in a 5 star hotel in every developed country you can find.

Oh so money IS an issue? ;)

Travel around Europe watching football and visiting the great stadiums :)

Nou Camp, San Siro, Molineux, Allianz stadium, etc...........

That seems boring to me tbh gimp! I'd just be wishing I was watching united all the time I was there :)

I'm also looking for something to do for a week or two over the xmas holidays if anyone has any suggestions :)

fly to Oz or NZ, grab a camper van and travel the country yourself. seems the best way to experience these countries. get a rough outline of the main places you want to visit and just make your way around.

i'm doing this in Jan, canna wait :D

Also i remember paying around, £1 a night to stay in the most beautiful places i've ever been to, in indonesia. Would wake up in the moring and go snorkelling, then have breakfast. Then go diving for the rest of the day.. bliss, no worries about aything. This is honestly the life.

some pictures to whet your appetite.

swimming under that waterfall was one of the most refreshing things i have ever done. honestly out there you can really live the life, and forget about everything back home. Have the time of your life.

That just looks and sounds like the best thing ever.

Ive seen most of the main countries in Europe, apart from the east and I no longer want to spend money on any package holidays.

Im free for about a month or 2 next summer and ive realised Id love to go travelling. I have a friend who would be up for it too.

We were thinking of going to USA and doing a 15 day road trip to take in as much as we can but it seems like a bit of a safe option. Ive heard about loads of people going to Thailand and the surrounding areas and it seems like more of an adventure.

Did you plan where you were going/staying? How long did you go for and how much does it cost?

After watching the beach I REALLY want to visit phuket and the surrounding areas.

Sorry for the hikack but it will presumably help out the OP in general too. :)

I get what you mean but you obviously don't just go for the football :)

Seeing Barcelona, Milan, Munich and others would be a great experience

Wouldn't cost the earth and you get to see some football while you're away

Im planning on doing something similar but hopefully going to Argentina and Brazil :D

Show some individuality and don't follow the heard. Don't just book some 'gap' trip with someone, it's nothing better than a glorified holiday, all laid out, everything arranged. If you want to travel properly then book a flight and step off the plane with no idea where you're going to stay that night, what you're going to do tomorrow - it'll be more fun and you'll come out of it better.

I've just come back myself from a year travelling and would say its perfectly possible to do Oz (or the East Coast) in 4 weeks. Particularly if the OP only goes from Sydney - Cairns.. Having said that I'd highly recommend doing Tasmania, Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road.

As for Oz Experience, I haven't done it myself but met many people who had and the feelings were generally mixed. One of my good friends absolutely loved it, and others have commented how its basically just an excuse for 18 y/o kids to go get wasted every night. Depends if that's your thing or not..

I did Kiwi Experience, which I loved, but that's not run by the same company any more and from what most people have said is very different. One of the main criticisms of Oz Experience was that everything is sooo far apart that you spend all day sitting on a bus and don't get to see much in comparison (to the Kiwi bus).

Oz Experience is also pretty expensive IMO - about twice the price of Greyhound (can get 45 day passes for about £150 up/down the East Coast) and you don't get much food/accommodation thrown in (if any) to offset that. I did Greyhound myself and found it very convenient and generally punctual but as always you do hear horror stories. If I went back though, I'd probably try and find some people do it in a car/van though.. having the additional freedom of your own car (which I did for the Great Ocean Road) meant we could make our own timescale and revisit places when the weather was bad etc which you obviously don't get with tours.

Happy to answer any other questions. You've got a lot of options if you just want to travel though. 4-6 weeks is enough to do either New Zealand (probably my fave country overall) or Oz. Or if you were feeling a bit more adventurous I met a lot of people doing Thailand, Laos & Cambodia in that sort of timescale.

I did some backpacking through vietnam and laos which was great. I would highly recommend just getting some tickets and a lonely planet for the countries you want to visit. Laos and cambodia are very nice places with lovely people. Depends what you want from the trip. Lots of temples in asia which are nice. Beaches in the islands. South america if you want a more western feel to things and lots of good things to do (bolivia salt flats google it).

I have driven round NZ as well which was loads of fun with some friends and you can invite randoms along too and just make it a good party round the country.

What ever you do make it as crazy as you can... just do not expect to travel far as you will otherwise you will be on a bus/train/plane the whole time.

Also check they spell your name right on your visas in dodgy places as I was ******* myself entering laos with a dodgy visa ( all worked out well in the end!).

You'll get a far better deal if you design your own bespoke package (where you want to go / what you want to do) with a travel agent, you'll be quite amazed at how much they can do from their little desk. :D

Have some preparation time on Tinternet researching various places though, there is a wealth of stuff to do / see.
Remember you don't have to fly home from the same airport you flew into either. I landed in Sydney, took another to Uluru, another back to Sydney, one from the gold cost and another from some place called Gladstone....
Then flew home from Cairns. :D

See yo over there , i'm flying out there in Feb.

Anyone who's do it care to share photos or online blogs to try and make all these long hours i'm working make it seem worthwhile ......
