As title.Fancy a go at turn based strategy but don't know where to start. Is it best to just buy Civ 5 or start somewhere else?

Help a noob out please :D

There's a lot of conflicting opinions, but Civ 5 for me still needs work. Civ 5 has the potential to be the best, however currently, it's just too buggy (multiplayer in particular).

Every Civ game has needed substantial patches in order to fix or balance things, which is why Civ 4 is probably the one I'd recommend as it's pretty much as updated as it'll get.

If you don't mind old school, then Civ 2 is still the best Civ game released to date in my opinion. It's the most complex and games can take days to finish - however people tend to want prettier graphics and shorter games these days hence me recommending Civ 4 over 2.

So in short, start with 4 and then when Civ 5 gets fully patched, go play that :)

Civ5 is a cracking game, but a tad too simple and one dimensional. Civ4 is almost perfect, though very difficult to pick up.

If you want something you can grasp in a few hours, go for 5. If you want something that takes a long time to get into, but will last for years then go for 4.

I agree with some of the people above, Civ 5 is the easier one to get into compared to Civ 4. Civ 4 , thanks to being out for years, is a more complete package though I have no doubt that Civ 5 will overtake Civ 4.

So Civ 5 is quicker to get into and is the one which will continue to get expansions and updates, its the one I would recommend going with to start. However, if you dont want to splash out full price for a game which you may or may not like then you could go for Civ 4 which is much cheaper , to see if you like it before later going to Civ 5.

Yeah, you definately made the right choice. It's far more accessible for someone like yourself and as others have said, it'll only get better with patches.

IMO, Civ5 will be the best in the series eventually. The combat side of things are much better and already the first big patch has started to help with non-combat stuff. One unit per tile in Civ5 is a huge improvement alone, way more tactical. AI is the biggest weakness however, but has been for the whole series, espescially when first released. I'm confident that will get sorted out soon enough though, via official patches and mods.

If you're a Civ nub like me then 5 is ok to start with. Despite watching the game through the decades gone by from its very first incarnation, I had never played it until now.

Make sure you do the tutorials firstly, obvious really and they are a bit annoying but will help you get used to that scary as hell interface.

It took me a solid week just to get to grips with the game as it is vast, and I'm still learning things everyday, despite being utterly hooked.

I can barely beat the AI on I believe the standard difficulty at present. I'll hate it when they eventually do improve the AI! It is a horribly addictive game though and most of my games last an entire week or so before I either get hammered by the AI, or I win.

I loved Civ 2 and wasted many days playing it, never got into any of the others though :(
If you only lost "days" worth, then you got off lucky :D

I spent probably around 10 years playing it, on and off. I played a game a few weeks ago with 3 other people and that game spanned across 3 days :)

They don't make 'em like they used to.

TBH I felt I had mastered Civ5 after a couple of big games. to be fair it was like 12 hours a day solid for 4 days but got it sussed now. Easy.

I remember previous Civs being abit harder/complex. So might aswell start on this and get more into it as expansions/mods come out.

My favourate turn based game has to be "Heroes of Might and Magic" Ahhh memories.

Yeah same.

If you play it in the style of Civ 4, you'll probably lose. You need to basically spam trading posts and get your money up, then ally with city states. As this is going on, form a small army and take over any AI early on.

Yep I agree that Civ5 is too easy right now, but it will get harder with patches I hope. Civ4 is more of a challenge but the play style is so different. As already pointed out, spam trading posts, hook up happiness resources and kill anything and everything that isnt you! :P
