i want to move to the us and work there for a while
as i wont have a green card or a job till i find one...how easy it is to get a job in the hospitality trade? (chef)
how much money would it cost till you first get paid?
thankd a lot

i am thinking of either NY or los angeles
ny is better as i have a very close friend there so i can stay at his place till i get my own.

as for the green card, we had a mexican guy in the restaurant i am in right now and he was in NY before for quite some time
needless to say that he didnt have a visa to work in the us.

i am also thinking about canada and australia
the head chef in my place is italian and he was in australia for a year working. he got the job within 2 days from arriving there.

Canada is a much easier option. You could even stick it out there until you get Canadian Citizenship and then move to USA?

Well if you hop on a plane and arrive in the US and start working.

1). You can't as you won't have a visa that enables you to work.
2). They will find out
3). No more trips to the USA for you!

You have to goto the US Embassy and obtain a visa that allows you to work over there. Now this will be tricky as you will need a company to sponsor you. Even with this you may only be allowed to work for a limited time.

The USA is one of the hardest places for a UK resident to obtain a work visa, let alone a green card!

I know of a few people who've gone over to their New York office and worked for a few months without a visa - tis perfectly possible to do it if the person paying the rent of your apartment is a US firm, you're general expenses are just going on the company AMEX and your salary is just getting paid into your UK bank account as normal.

Have also heard of a contractor who got deported, was on a flight back to Canada the next day then took a car back down into the US and was back at his desk about two days later without anyone knowing.

Though these people have more than a few connections - I wouldn't fancy going there on the off chance of getting a job as a chef - chances are you'll be doing some cash in hand work for below minimum wage.

Mate it is very very hard to get into the US as I am going through the process as I type. As people have suggested it is far easier to get into Canada and then if you want to get into the US.

There are options for getting into the US on a Visa and if you visit this site there is a wealth of info and people to advise you:

As for the suggestion above no you can not work as in go to the office etc on a Visa Waveable you can go over and consult your business contacts/have meetings, as long as you are not paid etc.

I am trying for a H1B visa where you need a US employer to sponsor you. You would now have to wait till Aprill 2009 to apply and if you do get it you can't go back to the US till October 2009. Another option is an L1b visa and that is where a UK company with US offices can transfer you over, but you have to have been working for the UK company for 1 year.

As I say there is tons of info on that site I linked I suggest you go and have a very good read and I would also suggest you don't mention the Illegal work you have been suggesting.

Where do the rules on "working" apply to me ?

Occasionally I have to go to California on training courses, I have never really thought about whether this breaks any rules

I went to New York for 10 weeks for training last summer and that was covered by my firm.

They sorted it all out - gave me an immigration letter etc but I was explicitly told not to say "working", rather, I was "training" - I guess that makes the difference Rotty.

actually i am gonna ring the us embassy tomorrow
i have an EU passport, i am not british myself but i am here working/studying since 2000.
i have a 10 year visa that expires in 2013 and i ve been in NY 3 times so far.
btw that forum is amazing
i am gonna lurk for a while there and i will start asking questions in 2-3 weeks
thanks a lot for that
