I want to survive

I'm really in the mood for a good survival game. One with injuries, hunger, inventories, ammo management and a good level of difficulty. Where avoiding a fight is sometimes the optimal choice due to having to conserve resources.

Old or new (If a new one exists), RPG or action, indie or mainstream i'm not too fussed, I just want to get stuck in. I've played STALKER and it's sequels with the complete mods to death, and also Fallout New Vegas on hardcore mode. I played Amnesia but whilst removing combat entirely is a nice idea, it kinda removes the survival aspect as you no longer have to consider the ramifications of using your precious ammo and bandages.

Any suggestions? I'm half tempted to grab the classic Fallouts from GoG as they sort of fit the description, but I would rather real time if possible.

Side note; Dead Space is not survival. Laser-cannoning a comic strip monster that just jumped out of a cupboard is not survival. The same goes for Resi 5.

Silly question maybe, you've not mentioned that you've played Fallout 3? You could certainly mod it into that sort of game.

The old Fallouts have a very weird difficulty curve (especially the first). Whilst they start off pretty tough, and you have to be fairly cautious over ammo usage, at about halfway (or even sooner) you hit a point where you have tons of money, ammo and guns, and it's more of a blastathon. I'm not sure it would be quite what you're looking for.

Have you considered a stealth game, like the Thief series? They've got the same element of cautious, considered play to them.

Played Dead Island and thought it was kinda awful.

The Thief games are in my top games of all time, but not survival, and I recently played through the third one so a bit thiefed out at the moment.

I have Project Zomboid, I should have said that in the op. It's really good but I did my usual thing of getting a new game that has a mechanic I really like and havn't played in a while and put in a few monster sessions and thus don't want to go back it just now.

There's a game on facebook called Dead Zone. It's your typical free to play but if you don't want stuff to take forever to do you have to pay to gain ingame currency to speed things up etc but it's made by ConArtists (http://www.conartistgames.com) and so I checked it out. You construct a compound in the city overrun with zombies, filling it with things like beds, farms, storage, construction works etc and send out squads of survivors to raid stores and streets and loot food, weapons and the like. These squads can then be equipped how you want and has a small RPG leveling element to it. I'm trying to find a game similar that isn't on a dumb micro-transaction scheme that I can just play without waiting eight hours for my water storage-tower to finish upgrading.

Also checkout Condemned, originally on X360 but later ported to PC, good game and quite atmospheric/scary throughout.

+1 to both Condemned and Cthulu. These are very creepy games, though I would probably opt for Condemned first; it's simply a better all round product imo re : mechanics and iirc visuals etc. When I get around to playing Cthulu the whole way through, it will get a much needed mod or two applied. :)

Whilst I haven't tried it yet - I Am Alive sounds like something you'd possibly enjoy.

EDIT: Just noticed this is in PC Gaming - Unfortunately, I Am Alive is only available for console :(

The original Deus Ex sounds like what you are describing...I imagine you already know of/have already played it though.

Dragon Age: 2, try and survive the opening of the game if you can, if you do survive, you clearly are a survivalist.
