I was out cruising last night...

their job is to keep the peace. Stopping fights is keeping the peace

So the Cops should stop and break up every single fight they come across on a weekend? Don't be daft, it's a complete waste of resources.

Drunk people fight, then they get up and go home, sometimes, if they're unlucky, via the hospital. If the guy wanted the Police involved he could press charges retrospectively.

OTT post of the day methinks

Or its a joke and Ive been whooshed.

Yup it is over the top, intentionally so. It is was posted as an example a social phenomenon, I forget the proper name for it but it is basically where you just fail to act to prevent somthing out of either staying within a social norm or fear of getting hurt. :)

Unfortunately thats been me twice, once getting smacked around with a bottle, luckily someone did call the police but apparently they took over an hour to respond, by which time I'd scared half of manchester by walking to the hospital with blood pouring out of my head like a waterfall, the second time getting smacked with a claw hammer. Why people can't just ask for my wallet first......

Both times the police were useless. But of more concern was the people who just sat by and let it happen.

I feel for you mate. It must really tick you off that no one helped you while you was being robbed. ive been robbed at knife point before, i was 15 i think.

Am sorry if this offends anyone, but the experience ive had with police, ive come to the conclusion that they are USELESS. End of. There just out there to pull me over and excercise there new "search" rights.

Yea? People like me dont drink though. So how would the police tell the difference if, lets say, i was walking down a street and a drunk guy started beating on me?

Not really sure if I agree with that, certainly around here you get arrested pretty fast if you start fighting in the street. It is a crime anyway, at least Drunk and Disorderly, then possible assault, then maybe GBH. So its probably best to stop it in the initial stages before someone ends up in hospital.

Yeah actually, I think they should.

What if the guy was killed during the fight?
Its a waste of resources to have doctors on £50k per year treating broken noses etc in a hospital because the cops couldnt be bothered to break up a fight and fill out a piece of paperwork.

What ifs are brilliant.

What if he died? It would be tragic for his family and in the enquiry the witnesses would say, 'a Police car went past', and the Policemen might get in big trouble.

What if the Police stopped and broke the fight up meanwhile a lady was raped and murdered half a mile away.

What ifs are largely pointless.

sorry for posting this, its not what youre expecting but....

So i went out for a cruise last night, around town, like you do. i usually drive past clubs and other busy areas.

no, why do you do that for? looking for some action? looking for attention? what do you drive?

Anyways, i saw a fight right outside a club, so i just stopped and watched it. i saw 2 guys, 1 with bust nose and the other guy was pinning him down. People were picking money/wallet up from the floor which the bust nose guy must have dropped while they were fighting.

Now this is probably a "normal" scene when you go out round town, theres always fights, especially where i live.
Heres the funny bit; The bouncers were just stood at the door, watching. They didnt stop the fight (i would had thought they would). I was still watching, as you do, not realising i was blocking traffic by stopping on the one way

I was watching for a good few minutes before a taxi driver asked me to move so the POLICE car a few cars behind me could see the fight and stop it. So i swiftly pulled up to the side of the road and thought id see how the police deal with it. Guess what? They drove to where i stopped orignally, saw the fight, looked at them for about 10 seconds? and then proceeded to drive past me in my parked car. I rolled down my window, and said "officer, there fighting over there, cant you see all the blood.....there still fighting, aint you going to stop them?"
he replied "i havnt heard any complaints" smiled and proceeded on his way.

sorry but youre as bad as the bouncers... i.e. just watching as someone was being beaten up (for a good few minutes as you said above). even more so for blocking traffic. shouldnt you be concentrating more on the road?

you should have called the police and and made a complaint. i take it you drove round and parked your car up before getting out and helping this guy? or.... did you just go away and tell everyone you knew? ;)

Indeed, but the difference is that the police can know for sure there is a fight going on, they witnessed it, but they have no idea what *could* be happening elsewhere. Until police have the power of foresight surely they should deal with incidents as they see them, and as they're directed by their control room.

I understand what Tru is saying, but the police cannot possibly know the facts of that fight before making a decision to not intervene. There will always be 'What if' scenarios for anything and everything. I'd like to think if I was getting seven shades of poo knocked out of me that a police car wouldn't just drive past and assume I'm just a drunkard having a little scrap out in the street. The police did the wrong thing driving away in my opinion.

the police are to keep the peace - if they see a fight its their job to stop it. if not, you'd have fights going on all over the place where people are settling their disputes (whatever they may be) in their own way

I can see where you're all coming from; a fight can turn into something a lot worse very quickly. At the end of the day it's a judgment call on the part of the Police, maybe they weighed up the situation and didn't think it needed sorting out? I don't like the Police, they've been much help to me (and I them) but they do a job that I'd never do, so, in general, they have my respect.
