I WON on a self service checkout!

See in that scenario I'd let the bar person know about it cos they'd be the ones getting stiffed when the till doesn't balance...

I have a lot less sympathy for a large coroporation however.

This really, if it's a smaller or more formal company I'd have let them know since it ain't right, but a tenner or so is absolutely nothing on these much larger corporations.

Though if it was a larger sum, I'd have returned it.

Besides, I never really check change until I leave the store, just shove it in my trousers, probably wouldn't even notice to begin with :p

I actually work for NCR as a retail and financial engineer, essentially servicing the Fastlanes ( self-service checkouts ), back office servers and ATMs.

The self service fastlanes use XP as the OS and then there's a ****load of applications and also anti-virus software crippling the machines . The ASDA ones are particularly slow and are pretty horrendous machines to work with, a rebuild can take up to around 4-5 hours.

As for the OP's experience, well I would say it's quite rare for the fastlane to give double the notes and double the coins, but you never know.

The note cassettes could have been packed to tightly resulting in two note picks instead of one, but then this should have been detected by the LVDT which measures the thickness of the note as it passes through the transport. If it's not as expected it throws the note or notes into the purge bin and does a fresh pick. No idea why two £2 coins would be given instead of one but you never know, stranger things have happened and possibly down to the control board.

There are no cameras in these things though, I can tell you that for sure. So unless you're caught by the store CCTV then I doubt they could trace you.

I'm just wondering what possible kind of error could lead to one of these giving double change. Not mechanical I doubt as it was both notes and coins. Software? I don't really see how it could happen either.

I'm calling shenanigans.

Hmm yes, it does seem a rather strange error - especially as it happened on the coins and the notes, implying there was some sort of software rather than mechanical fault... but what could cause this?

Maybe some employee doing it for personal gain? but it does seem rather odd. I'm undecided.

This reminds me of an experience I had a boots self service last xmas. Went to buy a bottle of perfume for my gf, went to self service and inserted my boots card, removed card and scanned item, hit finish and pay and inserted my debit card, inserted pin then it asked me insert my boots card again, removed debit card and inserted my mums boots card instead. The system crashed and woman came over, she it asked if I had been given my receipt I said no but didn't want one so she said I could go. Checked my bank statement when I got home and woohoo £42 perfume for free!

I also take advantage of the scan and go system at my local sainsburys, walk round the shop with a scanner scanning everything, accidentally on purpose forget to scan a few choice items take scanner to self service and pay. The system is subject to random rescans but since they've changed it to self service they only scan 10 items at random, the self-service guy can never be bothered so scans only the items at the top of the trolley. Been doing this for nearly 3 years now. Sometimes I take my gf's kids with me so I can blame them if I get caught.

It may well be reported to the police as it may be their policy but even if it's caught on camera the police are not going to pursue it. I mean surely that's obvious? It's not worth their time.

True. The amount isn't high enough and it would be unlikely to result in a conviction anyway.

Some of the statements in this thread are ridiculous it sounds like if any of you found a pound in a shopping trolley you would hand it in for fear of being branded a theif.

No, I'd hand it in because it isn't mine.

There are people who aren't thieves because they think stealing is wrong, not because they fear being caught.

I routinely find small amounts of cash at my workplace. I hand it in. I've no idea what they do with it and I don't care. I don't take it because it isn't mine.

There is bugger all the police will do as it will be impossible to be certain he dishonestly gained the money from CCTV footage.

We used to get ****** come into our restaurant and eat and then try to pay with a card that knew would decline, and there is dick all you can do as there is no way to be certain that they knew the card would decline, so the "attempt" to pay is enough under the law and then it becomes a civil matter.

Theft it is technically, but it's hardly crime of the century is it?

Damn you are low. No such thing as "accidentally on purpose"; you are a thief and to come on here an actually admit doing what you do should incur a ban imo.

Lol nice, I probably wouldn't have the balls to keep doing it and just walk away with double change, but fairplay it's not your fault and I seriously doubt they are going to become bankrupt over this.

P.S., which store and self service checkout number

what a weak sauce argument.

Sorry your honour on the day in question when I knowingly did take money from a supermarket checkout it wasn't my fault even though I went back to the machine numerous times and got my missus to back also.

Theft is theft. If you walked into the supermarket and told the checkout girl to hand over the cash would you say thats not theft either if she willingly gave it to you without you getting violent or menacing ?
