I would like a Hybrid (but with a front shock)

I disagree.

My CX bike has flat bars and was priced with the C2W scheme in mind.

Can a bike with flat bars technically be a CX? Genuine question.

Either way, being priced with C2W in mind could mean anything up to £1k. The OP has stated £500 max (yeah, they also stated they didn't want the kind of bike I suggested, so I'm being a hypocrite here:p).

it is a bit like some sort of cult recruitment sometimes :D

Can't argue with that :D

AFAIK there are no UCI rules against using flat bars in CX races.
It's certainly allowed in the scottish cx series (not raced under UCI rules), quite a few people race on mtbs.

Didnt spot this first time around. Thread winner.

Interesting. And wow, that bike is rather impressive for the price.

so you need to be a good cyclist to ride a road bike? I've jumped from a BMX that I couldn't keep on a ground.. to a road bike and I'm fine:) same with my brother?

Nope, was just pointing out that some people may not feel comfortable / confident riding a road bike if they're not used to swapping bikes around a lot.

That is pretty darn sweet. Would love one of those for my commute, but right now the drivetrain of my commute bike is being rained on because the retards who built the cycle shelter didn't build the overhang big enough  :(

So my commuter bike remains a 2nd hand Hardrock MTB with skinny tyres - because I picked it up in mint condition for £200.

The GT Transeo is a decent bike and should serve you well. Another one I'd look at in this price range is the Specialized Crosstrail Disc.

what CX bike has flat bars? and what gears does it have?

if it's not got a road bike groupset technically it's not a CX bike with flat bars? it's a hybrid.

does the frame look more like a road bike frame or a mtb frame?
It's certainly allowed in the scottish cx series (not raced under UCI rules), quite a few people race on mtbs.
UCI only allows mtbs in low level events they are banned from international calendar races

road bike with mtb parts...

pretty much the definition of 'hybrid' then?

the only road bike parts are the hubs?

hybrids have mtb gears , flat bars , bulky heavy frames, mtb seat posts etc

the only thing not mtb on them is the tyres?

what hubs are road bikes with disc brakes using? they using the same hubs as cx bikes?

Tell that to my bridle path KOMs. I'd be fairly happy challenging any hybrid bike rider to a race on "mild off road" with my regular old road bike.

As a fat bloke most of my KOM's come from riding a road bike in slightly inappropriate places. As a ~7.5kg road bike (with 25mm tyres) can take nearly 120kg battering it along canal towbanks, and in reality works just as well as my cross bike offroad hybrids seem completely pointless unless you must have a very upright position.
