I do not have time to learn and make a website, and I would like to pay someone to create me a professional website which is just a personal website of mine.

My website looks a bit dull and outdated and it is time for a refurb, the problem is I am not looking to spend £1000's as I simply cannot afford this and I think it is a bit much for a personal website.

I would like to spend maybe £200-£300 lesser the better, but I want something that stands out and looks and is well made up.

Where do I start? I do not want to be ripped off, scammed, or given work that is not worth the cost.

Can someone please give me some advice.

The website I want updating and "modern-fied" is this one:

IMO you won't get anything better than what you currently have with that budget.

The current site isn't even that outdated (I actually quite like it), there are far worse sites out there.

I wanted something more cleaner and more colourful, as a performer I think the website is looking a bit too dull. Maybe it is just me, what budget would I be looking at for a revamp on the website?

I would love to set up my own YouTube video page and have some good videos being made, maybe have a Twitter account even though I rarely use that, and Facebook.

YouTube is my main thoughts as I shall be having some new films soon which would be good to have. I think on the website it is filled with information that is not needed, for example the performing arts, I want to pursue more into the magic side of things. So I want the website to purely be me and magic.

Your website does a job, and it's very professional, yet still creative.

If you want to improve it, I would think you could do this from content. Adding more media may be one avenue to explore, using Facebook, Twitter and perhaps YouTube to publish some content.

Honestly chap, it is very easy the embed videos into websites, youtube provides the code for you.

I suppose I could just simply remove the pages that I do not want and just rearrange the text on the website and change the videos on the video page to all magic related videos from YouTube, may be my best bet.

I think a bit of site administration would do the "trick". ;)

£200-300 might get you a redesign, but simply that. A PSD and a few amends (if you want something half decent, which it looks like you do seen as though the current site is good and you want better!). Then it sounds like you'd want a CMS, so more budget to get that set up and the design themed.

If I were you I'd improve it via content, as others have suggested. Set yourself a target of a video blog post a week showing some slight of hand magic or something. Fresh content will keep people coming back and make the website look more complete.

There is not much wrong with the design at all tbh.

Thank you for the ideas guys, I am going to give it a go tonight and see what I can do to have it less cluttered and be targetted towards my magic and also link it to my YouTube/Twitter/Facebook.

I am unsure how to use the Twitter or Facebook though, should I just have a fan page and link that? I am unsure of Twitter as I rarely use it and also the stuff I type on it is a load of rubbish and non-magic related.

You could create a separate twitter a/c for your magic related stuff. Use it to state when new blog posts/site content/events etc are happening. Likewise if you wanted to create a separate page on facebook.

imo twitter should be used as a bit more of a informal way to communicate with your customers, say on your site you want to make a article explaining how to do a trick, you can then post on twitter how it was fun making the new article, or something like "been busy making a new article about hypnosis, will publish it soon hope you like it", or "been practicing a new trick, finding it very hard but lots of fun" etc. just a quick update on the life of a magician.

your site needs content, that's why it looks dull as there is nothing there! once content is added and you get an idea of what you want on the site then consider the re-design, as atm you don't fully know what you want to do. do you want a place for images? videos? a slideshow etc.

although the site is a bit old it's perfectly fine for a magician and would not put me off from using your services or change my mind when comparing your site design to a better one, the content will though

Go with Wordpress and some time find finding a great template that fits your content. You can probably buy a professional template for under £100. You shouldn't be redesigning or coding a site that small. :-)

The problem is I have seen other magicians websites like this is one of my favourite:

These are many magicians who sell magic effects on too, but I like how clean there website is and the design with the flash banners and pictures etc. I would like something like that but I would not need as many pages as they do.

Out of your budget, I'd have thought.

Following triggerthat's suggestion, I think you might be able to get by with some variant of Wordpress 3.0's new default "TwentyTen" template, with a bit of tweaking. Much more budget-friendly :)

No real point throwing money at a site until it shows that it can throw some money back ;)
