i3 2100 for BF3 Multiplayer

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm thinking of moving from my i7 860 to i3 2100 (and Z77 board) for the lower temps and power usage, but I'm worried I'll take a massive hit in gaming performance :(.

You'll save 12p a month* in leccy and take the rest of your life to make the difference back. Save for a proper upgrade imo

Not about saving on the bills mate; it's just that the OC'ed i7 dumps a lot of heat in my case/room.
Also, using a lower power CPU will give me a little more headroom when running SLI/CF on my 600W PSU. For reference, my i7 uses ~140W underload vs 95W for a 2500k, and even less for the i3.

FWIW,

Created a thread about my performance in benchmarks and there is a huge difference between i3-i5 in 3dmark 11 (1500+ points STOCK, 2000+ when oc'd @4.5ghz). Also have noticed a massive difference in crysis of 15+ fps.

This is with a GTX680 however which would be bottlenecked more than your card by the CPU I would imagine.

I bought the i3 after reading about its gaming performance which is reasonable and it is a good general chip, but I have benefited hugely by upgrading to the i5 2500k.

The i3 also has a locked multiplier to my knowledge so you can barely overclock it to make up that performance gap.

If you can afford it get the i5.
