I'm looking to upgrade my system very soon, I'm hoping that just a gpu upgrade will be enough to keep me going for another 6-12 months and then look at getting a new cpu. Currently I have an i3 3220 with a pretty dead 550ti, I'm hoping to get a r9 280x or similar and was wondering how much of a performance increase I would see if I added an i5?

Im not a massive gamer tbh mate , but i could see the i3 holding back the 280x in a few scenarios. You would get some good performance gain but ideally the i5 or i7 upgrade would be the best idea for overall gaming performance.

I wouldn't be pairing an i3 with an R280X.
My brother has an i3 2120 with a 7870 and that's a pretty hefty bottleneck (He's always putting off his CPU upgrade) but it runs stuff fine, but no where near as well as he could do with a better CPU.

i3's are actually very capable in gaming. You would see a bigger improvement in games by getting a better GPU than CPU for sure. Keep your i3 for now get the 280X, when Broadwell chips come out think about upgrading to a quad core for a lil extra performance.

Yeah, I know it will bottleneck it, but it is just until I can afford to upgrade the cpu, as long as games are still playable on medium + settings I'll be fine
