i3 kabylake vs i7 920

I would say wait 3-4 weeks and see what AMD brings to the table with Ryzen.

But here is a comparison of the two processors.

i mostly use the i7 for basic CAD, bit of corel draw, internet offfice etc.. be nice to get a bit more up to date with sata3 usb3 ddr4 etc

Buy a cheap hex core xeon and a sata3/ usb 3.0 card..

Job done, cheaper and more powerful for a productivity workload

I3 2c/4t from an i7 4c/8t would be a rather underwhelming 'upgrade' nehalem and westmere cpu's overclock like champs to....

I tried hex core and was unable to overclock it wouldn't post. Tried USB and SATA cards and there was hardly. Any speed increase

Most sata3 cards are rubbish as they are pcie 1x what you need is a proper sas2 card, I was in same situation 1156 board no sata3 or usb3 got myself an LSI sas2 card with 2 SAS to 8 sata breakouts voilà hardware raid onboard cpu got mine for £20 the thing is a beast

You were doing something wrong/ had a dud chip/ dud mobo if you could not overclock a d0 stepping nehalem quad or a westmere hex to at least 4Ghz.

If you have an Asus x58 board look out for a 'u3s6' card

Pci-e 2 x4 band with for full speed sata3/usb3. Other options available for other boards.
 
I got my i7-920 to 3.8 .. but when I tried xeon pc wouldn't boot with anything but the default bios settings
 
Went from an i7 860 to i5 7600k and def happy I did. From a core speed of 3.9Ghz on the i7 to 4.8 on the i5 had over 30Fps in games, less heat and power usage plus benefits of m.2 drives, usb3 header etc .
