i3 or stick with my q6600 ?

Things tend to hit a level at a certain point, the q6 + board + ram + hsf etc will still fetch a reasonable price in 12 months at best I reckon it'll only drop a further 10% from where it is now

Feeble effort at "justification" :D . . . DDR2 value is increasing, DDR3 value is decreasing . . . your board and mobo are holding their value well . . . just because people on this forum don't drool over your older kit has no bearing on what the parts are worth @ auction . . .

If you would like to do something . . . why are you asking us exactly? :confused: . . . I can't see any good reason for you to upgrade apart from Upgraditus and a good dose of boredom! ;)

If you want Intel® Core™ i3 then buy Intel® Core™ i3 . . . you don't need it as you already have a fast QuadCore . . . you will not notice any difference at all and your main reason about selling the older kit before it loses value is backward as the cheaper Clarkdale chip, mobo & DDR3 will be worth less sooner! :p

isnt it my understanding the i3 works like a quad as its a dual core with hyperthreading ? but yer anyways stick with the q6600 but if you really want to up grade go am3 its dirt cheap to begin with so it cant lose much value :) lol and it also has a upgrade path

not exactly, it shows 4 threads, like a quad core does. But its no subtitute for 4 physical cores.

dual core HT would give it a slight boost over a standard dual core, but it wouldn't get close to a quad core

Having worked with both chips, the Q6600 still out performs the i3. The i3 is a great chip for entry level PCs where discreet graphics isn't required but other than that I'd look for no less than 4 physical cores as more software will be made available to optimise these.
 
I'd say after reading all that, is the consensus is to stick with the tried and true q6600 and resist the itch, your real world performance gains from getting an i3 and going ddr3 are so marginal that its throwing away money, no matter how good the deal. Wait for sandybridge and get whatever this forum humms over once they are out :)

i have decided to stick with my set up and im actually just going to watercool the cpu.

this is what im thinking of in the back of my mind.

i know i said i would keep my set up but on the other hand i am still uncertain.

the i3 in some test's does beat the q6600 and i do realise it is only a 2 core cpu and mine is 4 but for what i use it for i think the i3 would be better.

my reasoning on the change is this......
i3 would be cheaper to run.
it's a newer board and cpu.
lower power consumption.
i already have a h50 to watercool it.

i hate all these decisions.
 
I have to admit i've just gone for a mini system revamp, not for any real reason other than to mess about... oh and reduce power consumption! lol

the old setup (core mobo/cpu built in 07!!) was a Q6600 G0 (VID 1.1v) and Asus P5E-VM HDMI which clocked rather nicely :-) to the i3 setup you see in the sig below. only bolted it all together yesterday so no real comparisons done just yet.

from what i understood the i3 550 was on a par with the Q6600 in most tasks, so i was happy. the intention will be to mess about with this i3 then in about 12 months cram in an i7 870,880 or 875k when the price comes down a bit.

already got the i3 to 4.5GHz so i think i'm gonna have fun playing with it :-)


But at the end of the day, is it an upgrade in speed no, but it'll keep me occupied lol
