i3 v q6600

Here's a comparison:

Some tasks do better on the Q6600 being a true quad core, others work better on the newer architecture of the i3.

I'd go for the Q6600 as it's a lot cheaper to upgrade and the i3 540's platform (LGA1156) is about to be retired anyway.

Thats also with the Q6600 at stock speed, if the rest of your hardware gives you scope to crank it up to say 3, or 3.2ghz, or more then the Q6600 would be an even better choice.

The Core i3 540 should easily hit 4Ghz, I don't think the Q6600 even at 3.2Ghz will compete with that in most things.

Already having a Socket 775 motherboard though I would get the Q6600. Still a great processor that will handle anything that you'd wish to do.

The i3 beats the Q6600 in most things:

Whoops it in gaming. Although overall it dosent beat it by a massive amount so i would just go with whatever upgrade is cheapest, Q6600 is old and the i3 is soon to be replaced with sandy bridge models so if you dont need a better CPU right away then waiting for a bit may be the best idea.

I wish people would stop directly comparing processors without taking stock speed into consideration. The i3 is better than the q6600 at anything that uses 2 or less cores, otherwise a Q6600 will be better.

Yeah but its not better by much thanks to the i3's hyper threading that allows it to beat true quad cores in many things and give them a run for their money in multi-threaded stuff.

Show me where an i3 beats an equally clocked quad core at anything that uses all four cores.

At best, and i3 would be equal to a Q6600 with 3 cores active.

Thats what I'm saying, the comparison on the link posted above is at stock speeds, if the OP has can overclock a Q6000 a bit, it would make more sense than buying an i3 AND a new mobo.
