i5 2500k running hot

Hey everyone

OK had my 2500k for about a week now and fancied giving it a good clock :pI've got to 4.5ghz so far but running core temp and intel burn test the core temps jump to about 74c after 5 runs.

I heard the max temp for these chips is 72c so ideally i'd like to try and get temps down to mid 60's under stress if possible. I've noticed that when the cpu is at full load my voltage is 1.3711 which is far too much from what ive read.

How do i change the voltage? I've tried changing in bios but it just basically ignores my set voltages and goes straight to 1.37 at load. Idle voltage is around 1.1v.

Was thinking of trying 4.5ghz at 1.3550v and see if thats stable and good temps and if i can stay there ill be happy. BTW bclk is set to 100mhz and multi is x45

Only way you will reduce those temps to the 60's on air is with something like the Silver arrow or the noctua nh-d14. Having said that you can also get one of the sealed watercooling units that perform great as well. for less than the cost of the best air coolers.
 
from what ive read on other forums my cpu should be pretty stable @ 4.5ghz at 1.280v. If i can get to that then surely my temps should drop a bit?

all chips are different, all chips are in different set ups, all set ups built to the same spec are manufactured at different times dates and with some different components.

what works for one will not alway work for another, its all trial and error ( bsod to be exact :D )

just keep reducing your volts till it wont boot in then add more till it boots in and dosent bsod after 4 hours of prime then you will have a stable oc.

@4.5 yes you should be lookint at low volts, min llc maybe lvl1, no pll overvoltsage.

temps will drop, maybe look at a corsair sealed liquid cooler if you are worried? improve your fans in your case?

The 72C maximum is the Tcase Max. The junction maximum (Tj. Max) is 98C. If you are seeing individual core temperatures these should be considered in relation to the Tj. Max. A single temperature such as that reported by your motherboard is more similar to Tcase.

Core temperatures hitting 74C means you are 24C away from the maximum.
 
thanks for the replies. Still using my old antec 900 case with standard fans in all set to medium speed. Thats the thing, what voltage should i drop? tried setting cpu voltage in bios to 1.320 and it still jumps to 1.37 during stress. Can i simply set the pll voltage to 0 or as close as i can get to 0?

Im using core temp to monitor all four core temps not the cpu in general.
 
No, you shouldn't really change the PLL voltage. Do you have Load Line calibration enabled? That might explain why your voltage increases slightly under load. Just drop the cpu voltage to say 1.3, and set load line calibration to low/medium. If it stable, drop the cpu voltage one increment, say -0.05v, check it is stable, drop the voltage, and so on, repeating this pattern until you find the lowest voltage that the chip is stable at. Also, check that turbo mode, or any of the auto overclocking options are off. I think they automatically stop if you are overclocking manually, but you might want to check anyway.

Thanks for the replies again.

Found out my coretemp program was showing wrong volts for some reason? Anyway i set my cpu to 1.3v in bios and the asus mobo tool is reporting 1.275 idle and 1.293 under load stable after 5 intel burn tests and 5 hours prime95.

max temp on any one core was..... drum role....... 63c!!! :D

I'm happy with that 4.5ghz clock now :D
