Hi all my sister has been using my first rig I built for over 6 years now and with the exception of the GPU which is a Rx 580 8gb (she bought this 2 years ago that I also installed for her ) needs a complete upgrade

The old rig is
I5 2500k
Asrock z68 I believe
Crucial 64gb ssd
Seagate Barracuda 3tb HDD
Antec true power new 650w Psu
Zalman z9 plus case

Only the GPU was replaced since I made this year's ago originally she had my 7970 3gb but that failed so I swapped it out for the rx580

She uses the pc to exclusively play final fantasy 14 chat with friends on discord

She has a 1080p/60hz monitor but is having to run the game at 720p so I'm guessing the CPU is bottlenecking the 580

She's keeping the GPU but wants to change everything else and of course wants RGB on the case like her partner's pc lol

Judging by how old the rig is she's in a position where every chip from AMD or intel is gonna be a big upgrade but wants the cost to not be sky high and wants me to keep it under £400 for everything if possible but could increase to £500

I'm leaning towards the ryzen 5600 at the moment but as I upgraded mine to the 5800 a few years back haven't really paid much attention to hardware so I'm not sure if that's still the best bang for the buck or if intel have any chips that are great value. Last time I was looking everyone was suggesting AMD for performance per pound

I know the mobo ram and CPU is gonna take most of the budget so I'm gonna have to get creative with trying to get case and storage and a reliable PSU in there too I'll probably go over budget but I'm sure she'll get the family discount when she pays me back

Merry Christmas all and thanks for any help

I'd go with AM4 as any 8/9/10/11 gen Intel wont be worth it as the high end CPU's of each generation are expensive af and the mid range Intel will more than likely get beaten by a 5600 in gaming.

Not sure what a Alderlake setup would get you but I would think an AM4 system would be better value for money.

12400 build it is the faster choice but if price is lower, then 5600 build, agree with the rest in here, solid choices.

not true, why do people lie about amd and intel....
there blow for blow, neck and neck. but the 12400 uses enuf power to heat your house

the OP games...

I have a 12400(oc) and 5800x, and had access to a 5600. They trade blows but the Intel tends to win 'harder' when it wins, as some games really don't like AMDs architecture that much, albeit on average there's not much in it, so it comes down to whatever he can find a better deal on. The 5600 and 12400 are both good systems. There are some games that prefer AMD also so it's not like it's a one directional fight either.

It also doesn't use that much power at all at stock in games due to relatively low stock volts and clocks so not sure what you're talking about in regards to power consumption there, the power consumption is not all that far removed from a 5600.

Press example:

The 12400 gets hot and a bit thirsty when overclocked as it's way outside optimal, roughly doubling power consumption, but thats pretty natural as you're way off the optimal power curve at this point, and there will be a reason why any silicon didn't make the grade to higher bin.

Also if your going with the 5600 build, check the RAM carefully, it can be an absolute ball ache getting it to run and be careful buying faster RAM as a rule of thumb with AMD processors is, it might not work. Safe bet would be 3600Mhz and below, anything above could be hit or miss.

Hey all thanks for all the replies been busy with work so not had chance to reply, due to getting a puppy she lowered her budget slightly, I managed to get an i5 1104f bundle on here for £249 and the rest I got decently discounted to so managed to get the whole lot for £420

Big upgrade over what was before, nice one.

actually specifically for OP's use case, going intel is the correct way to go (when comparing 12400 vs 5600)
i myself play ffxiv and i had a 5900x - ffxiv doesn't use all the cores efficiently and is very cache + ST sensitive
i made the side-grade from the 5900x to the 5800x3d and basically my fps is now pegged at 165 with no drops

see the gamersnexus chart here (start at 8:29 for ffxiv) - 175-180 fps for the ryzen 5000 series vs 201 fps for the 12400
(and 218 fps for the 5800x3d :p )
