Hey guys I've done some overclocking and got the i5 2500k to 4ghz, I plan to leave it like this since I didn't mess with the voltages, I took a screenie to see if the voltages were at stock because I cant find the stock value voltage and would you recommend this for running all my time my computer is on?

Clocking to 4GHz on auto voltages is fine - but i would enable speedstep as that's the beauty of SB - you can clock the nuts of it and still use all the green features.
 
Disabling things like Speed Step is frankly antiquated advice based on older platforms or high overclocks where it did in some limited cases affect stability. With a 4GHz on a 2500K there is no advantage to changing such options.

So I agree with Plec, leave it enabled, it keeps temperatures and electric consumption to a minimum while you are doing things like browsing the net, where the HP isn't needed.

Make sure you stability test it with something like Prime95 Blend and/or LinX, but as it stands thats fine.
 
If you've clocked using 'auto voltages' then, yes, when the chip is idle it will drop to 1.6GHz and voltages should drop to ~0.98V (as long as speed step is enabled).

Basically, when it's put under load more volts a run through the CPU and it throttles up to whatever the multipleir is set at - in your case 40 (4GHz).
 
I tired re-enabling speedstep but no for some reason it doesn't throttle down it just stays at 4ghz when there is nothing running. I loaded back into bios set everything to the default(f5) and went into system made sure it was corrected, it was so I went back into bios and changed the turbo ratio from auto to 40 and it still runs on 4ghz with speedstep enabled, I know I'm doing something wrong but not sure what it is.
 
Well with MSI boards there is a bug (or an intentional feature) where when you overclock it disables it automatically, I know you don't have an MSI board but it might be a similar situation. Firstly make sure you have the latest BIOS for your board.

If you are on the latest then reset to defaults, save, exit then go to the advanced CPU page of the BIOS page where the SpeedStep setting is, note down all the settings and what they are set to (or take a photo). Up the Turbo, save exit, go back into the same page and double check they are all the same as they were at defaults. It might be changing more than one setting which is disabling the throttling down. At least thats what was happening with the MSI boards I had.

Wouldn't updating the bios remove the profile I have from OCuk the overclocked to 4.6ghz

It would delete it yes as far as I'm aware but then a few settings are easy to note down. It might be running the latest, according to the link below 0902 is the latest and the only fix is the 22nm processor support. So as long as you are running at least 0706 you should be fine, you can find out under "Main".

It seems an odd issue but nothing to worry about really. Under CPU Power Management it is set to enabled right? I assume you are using either the Energy Saver or Balanced power plan in Windows?

PS. There is a typo in your sig. Asus P8Z58-V... should be Asus P8Z68-V
 
thanks for pointing out my sig error :P Would the windows plan affect the settings of the cpu? I'll check out my verison and then check cpu management. Thanks.

edit:Version was 0801 x64 and I checked around bios speedstep was enabled everywhere :S

Well I've had it do strange things but as yours clocks down at stock this is unlikely the problem.

Under Advanced > CPU Configuration does the CPU C1E option change when you overclock? Try forcing that to Enabled rather than Auto. See if that solves the issue.
