i5 3570K Overclock Help

I've the i5 3570K overclocked to 4.5GHz with 1.295V and 1.320V at full load for a year and a half now, but recently I keep getting BSOD and it seems to be a unstable overclock over a period of time, so I want to reset the BSOD to default and start the overclock again,

My main use of the computer is for university, internet and a little bit of gaming with onboard graphics, what's the best GHz I should get the chip to?

Is it best to also do a full clean Windows installation as well?

Also can someone guide me through the overclock process please, my specs are listed below,

CPU: Intel i5 3570K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77 D3H
Cooler: Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure

I would aim for a respectable 4.5ghz oc

just copy the settings and if it doesn't post or crashes add one/two clicks more cpu vcore offset

also enter your own ram speed/timings or enable x.m.p memory profile if your memory supports it,post back if you need anymore help

and its upto you to do a clean install or not
 
To overclock, I raise the CPU Clock Ratio to 4GHz and leave CPU VCore at default and use Prime95 to stress test for about 30 minutes, if no problems, I keep upping the CPU Clock Ratio using default CPU VCore until I get either error or BSOD? If so how much CPU VCore I should up?
 
how high do you want to clock to? try for 4.5ghz in the guide I posted just copy the settings apart from putting in your own ram speed/timings or use x.m.p memory profile

I wouldn't advise cpu vcore on auto as it will use a lot more than you need

I'll start the overclock tomorrow morning and aiming for 4.5GHz, I've few questions to ask so I'm ready and prepared,

1. So I keep upping the CPU Clock Ratio using stock voltage until it's unstable and then I up the voltage?

2. How do I know if the GHz I'm on is unstable and needs more voltage? Any signs?

3. If I'm on 4.2GHz using stock voltage and want to test the stability before I up the CPU Clock Ratio more, how long of Prime95 should I run before I move on?

4. Which option I choose in Prime95 to stress test the CPU?

you should just set to 45x off the bat,set all whats in each screenshot for 4.5ghz apart from memory speed/timings use your own or enable xmp

then try booting up if it wont boot add one/two clciks more dvid voltage and retry,same if it crashes in windows

all the time keeping an eye on full load cpu voltage in cpu-z and core temps in realtemp

stay below 1.4v cpu load v and below or inbetween 80-85c

use blend test in prime,also play games aswell to find stability,if games crash to desktop you need one/two clicks more dvid and retest with gaming

What if after one or two clicks of DVID voltage and it still doesn't boot or crashes in Windows?

When do I up the CPU VCore?

How long of Prime95 should I run to check the stability of the overclock?
 
if you raise cpu vcore then cpu wont throttle at idle

if you set to normal then add voltage to the cpu through dvid cpu will then throttle in speed/voltages at idle which will result in a much cooler cpu at idle
So I change CPU VCore to Normal and leave it at default voltage and only up voltages by one or two clicks each time via DVID?

Should I run Blend or Custom test in Prime95?

I read that using Custom test with this rule is good but don't know if it's better than Blend,

"Memory to use in MB" should be set to 512 x # of GB of RAM installed. 4GB x 512 = 2048. 8GB x 512 = 4096.

its not too bad but could be improved upon maybe

try just changing llc from medium to low then see what load cpu voltages are

oh and set dynamic vcore (dvid) from auto to normal
I've set LLC to Medium at the moment and DVID to +0.010V, at full load the voltage is 1.320V, currently running Prime95 Blend test
 
I've had quite a lot of BSOD screens,

A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval

An attempt was made to execute to non executable memory

Page Fault In Nonpaged Area

System Service Exception
 
yeh you will until you find a stable dvid voltage

that's better 1.32v
It boots into Windows and then tells me Windows Explorer has stopped working and it freezes and then gives me BSOD, overclock or hardware fault?

I just want a fast stable system so I can use it for university and abit of light gaming
 
needs more voltage (dvid)

roughly 1.3-1.35v is the norm for 4.5ghz

you will get it stable it just takes a little time,i have mine clocked the same way and its solid
So all the BSOD I got is related to overclock and not hardware?

Also should I use RAM X.M.P profile or manually set it to 16?
