Hi all,

I am considering a Intel i5-3570K as a possible upgrade from my AMD Phenom II 1090T. However, never had a build where I have used Intel before so I am trying to gauge whether this would be a good option.

1) Really only use my PC for gaming (mostly Battlefield 3) tho odd browsing and watching of movies etc.

2) Running a MSI GTX 670 OC and feel this maybe being held back by the CPU.

3) Also looking at the MSI Z77 MPower board.

I guess I am just trying to gain some feedback on whether this is a good decision. I have seen all sorts of comparisons etc and the i5 is a lot better but would it be worth waiting for the Haswell, tho cost of them might price me out anyway.

I think you will see a performance increase, but if I was you, I would probably wait at this point for the new chips.

Bottleneck yes, game breaking no.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but the smart money is on waiting.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99
1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £169.99
Total : £360.78 (includes shipping : £9.00).

The difference between the last 2 generations is a tenner. Honestly, buy now. You won't regret it. The main upgrade in haswell is the iGPU and you won't be utilising that. At most you're missing out on 10% performance increase from Ivy Bridge - You won't notice it !

Most likely very true. But at this stage no one can say definitively that there is not going to be a big difference between IB and Haswell.

It's all conjecture.

I would wait. Haswell will come this year no? Possibly by the summer.

If it was my money with your set up, I would wait.

For instance I wanted to upgraded my self, but I was half way between SB being out and IB coming out.

I thought I would wait and buy my components when they where new and hot.

I also waited and waited on the 670 to be released before buying a new gpu.

At the end of the day the only difference your see between your current computer and a new iB based one, would mostly be much improved minimum frames. Which yes, will make a big difference, but its not currently game breaking.

Is it?

Youll see all of a maximum of about 5 fps extra on the minimum, the rest is down to the GPU for maximum as they aren't bottlenecked at the minute or will for a long time.

Ivy has no trouble with heat imo, it's not really an issue and if anything the next ones won't be soldered either.

Thanks for all the replies and it's something that has been bugging me whether to wait or not.

My current 990FXA-UD3 and Phenom II 1090T I feel is hurting my 670 for sure largely to do with the 990 only being PCI 2.0 not 3.0 and the processor being well not the best. I have been asked to build a machine for a relative so I might be sneeky and put the propsed parts from my OP and see what the effects might be.

I am not a hardcore gamer and not after a PC which can run super high frames but one that is solid and last me a good 3 years at least.

From what I've read, the only improvement on Haswell over IB is on the integrated GPU, so if you have a dedicated graphics card, then I'd say there's no reason why you can't go for the IB now. Sure it means it won't will be the latest tech but thinking about it practically, you'll not be disappointed and the CPU will perform and last just as long as any forthoming releases so should last years.

It's true that the focus of Haswell is on the integrated GPU and reducing TDP, but we should still see a small but significant increase in IPC (in the region of 5-15%).

Wish I never started this thread now the answers ar really throwing me in every direction.

Huddy what you have said is exactly what I have read which made me think of changing over to IB in the first place.

Decisions, decisions. All you're comments are appreciated thanks.

It's simply a case if you can wait, then do so but on the contrary if you can't then there's no reason not to go IB now. As tbh says, the Haswell may give you a 5% to 15% performance increase but in real world what does that equate to? Very little is my guess. :)

I would wait for Haswell.

I read it uses a new 1150 socket and if that'ss correct do you really want to spend £150 on a top flight 1155 motherboard knowing its already a dead socket going forward.

I'd wait for Haswell. The LGA1150 socket will also support Broadwell, so when it arrives you have a potential upgrade path without having to change motherboards.

TDP has actually gone up to 84 according to a lot of leaked documents. This is probably due to the iGPU needing more power.

Really, go Ivy Bridge. If you're waiting for the next best bit of tech then you'll never buy anything. It will last just as many years as Haswell.

It's a given now that to see a major lift in performance it always involves a motherboard upgrade sooner rather than later. I really wouldn't let the upgrade path be a deciding factor.

You'll also be paying a premium for wanting the latest tech. Meanwhile you can get very decent IB motherboards which are sub £100.

Go for IB.
