Hi.

I now have an i5 750 + evga p55 sli, ram is corsair 1600Mhz.
I would like to overclock it a little bit as, by default, at 2.66GHz it's very little perceived difference to my 2.53GHz laptop.
Is it a safe bet that 3.9-4GHz should be achievable? That, I imagine would make a world of difference for me.
Is there a way to use a windows utility to only overclock when needed?
I think that my system would get hot & noisy when running at 4GHz all the time.
Ideally I would love to only overclock one or two cores, but I guess that's only possible with i7 or is it?

I hope you arent using the stock cooler? And no you cant OC just some cores, its all or nothing.

Yes you can :)

You have to enable Turbo Boost, EIST and C-states in BIOS. CPU multiplier must be set to auto/20x.

This will give you 21x multi under full load, 23x/24x when two or one cores are in heavy use.

Any more advice needed?

Not to mention, it won't run at full speed all the time as long as you have SpeedStep on :p it'll only run at full power when it's needed.

Excellent advice. Thanks lads, I'll fiddle with it tonight, there's a handy clear CMOS button at the back in case I screw things up a little, and no it's not stock, a tower cooler, a little bit like megahalems, but from coolermaster so I guess nowhere near as good..

hi xchaotic

the coolermaster should be ok i woudl suggest checking out a few i7/i5/i3 overclocking guides [the same principles apply] as well as the stickies at the top of this page.

you should be able to push in the region of the 4ghz on an i5 by using the following settings

200 bclk
20 multiplier

1.375v cpu vcore
1.65 dram voltage

then just set your ram up :)

Thanks again, I am a little bit behind the curve as last time I overclocked bckl was still called FSB :)
