Hi,

I recently got a new PC. According to PC Probe 2 (software that came with motherboard) the i5 760 CPU is about 75 degrees, it fluctuates between 70 and 83 from what I've seen. Is that high ? or not a problem.

I didn't get a custom CPU cooler this time around because I wasn't planning on overclocking for the time-being. If I wanted to overclock later I would have gotten some kind of CPU cooler. So it just has the stock cooler.

Use Core temp or Real Temp and run prime for 20 mins.

But temps do seem on the high side!!

I started to run Prime95 but I turned it off cause I got scared. lol. Here are some screens:

During the test (only about 1 min~ in):

So some of the cores went up to 98 on 100% load :/

Hmm, I don't think I did anything wrong when I did it. What should I make sure to do and not do? Pretty sure I put enough thermal paste on it, maybe it needed more?

Are you using the stock heatsink?

this comes pre applied with paste, sometimes less is better!

Yes the stock one. I think it did come pre applied, but I added a little more. (was following the motherboard instructions, maybe a little dumb) What do you suggest I do? remove the extra paste that I applied to the CPU?

But can a little extra thermal paste make temps that much higher? Pretty sure it's fitted correctly, i'll check when I open it up in a min.

Yes, remove the cooler, clean both surfaces best as possible then reapply fresh paste.

What compound you using.

Back, the temps are 34, 33, 35, 34 right now. So it might be a small improvement.

The kitchen roll worked fine at removing it. But I think the problem (if I still have it) may be the thermal paste. I applied a smallish blob in the middle of the CPU so it would spread to cover most of the middle when I put the heatsink on. But after I pressed down with the heatsink I took it up again to see if it had spread ok, it wasn't a solid surface more like little blotches, hard to explain.

The paste is more than 3 years old now and it had been used before so it's possible that it dried up a little bit or something. If I still have the problem I think I'll get some new paste.

Edit: I ran Prime95 for 5 mins, this is the result:

So it is a little better now, but still too high? Think I should get some new paste?

Re-run prime and see what the max temps are.

But ideally you should have not pulled the heatsink backup with out wiping and re-apply.

I personally don't rate the Intel cooler so I would be inclined to get a new / superior cooler.
