HT is helpful for games but it depends entirely on the games ability to utilize the extra threads it provides, I.E if a game cannot make use of the additional threads an i7 can handle vs an i5 then the will be no advantage, however if the the game can take advantage of the extra threads an i3 can handle over a Celeron, Pentium, AMD X2/X3 then the game will benefit.

i5 or i7 for gaming?

I think the simplest way to put this is...i7 over i5 is only worth it when you have money to spare, rather than eat money away from your graphic card budget.

4670k + 7950
or a
4770k + 7850
I know which i'd go for.. (the top one).
