i5 or i7 for gaming

Where are people getting the facts from about the i7 being better for SLI/Xfire setups over single cards then the i5?

In my case it's from personal use. Ive used a 3570k, 3770k, and several haswell chips with sli. In certain games with sli an i5 leads to very high cpu use and lower gpu use. Switching to an i7 alleviates this.
