Confused, thinking about getting a new processor for my other p.c. I have a Q6660 in this one, but is a Hyper Threaded higher frequency Dual Core going to out perform a Q6660 in most games?

Q6600 is a good CPU but if you're building new no point in getting old tech. Also you're Sig may get nuked as it's larger than the rules on here allow :)

If building new and not using old socket 775 motherboard, then you should only consider i3 530 (£100)/i5 750 (£150)/i7 920 (£220)- choose the one that suit your requirements (may it be gaming, graphic works, or video encoding etc) and budget the most.

In that order Marine? For example. i3 for gaming, i5 for graphic work and i7 for encoding.

So I am a bit confused here too.

I've got a Q6600 at 3.6 and a 5870. The most stressful thing the PC is doing is gaming. My assumption was that I was pretty well covered with the GPU and that there wasn't really any CPU out that would give any, real world, tangible, improvements over the Q6600?

The basic i3 (forget the model number) is faster than a Q6600.

at what ?
anything single threaded if its clocked the same or higher than the q6600 then yes but anything multi threaded that can use the 4 cores it will get sorely spanked even clocked at 4ghz by a q6600 at over 3ghz which just about all of them will do with ease.
i have to disagree with your statement here i'm afraid

From what I've read the i3 at 4GHz will give slightly better FPS in most games than a 3.6GHz Q6600, however it's probably not worth the time/hassle to upgrade considering the difference isn't massive. Most people suggest going for a Phenom II X4 or an i5/i7.
