My thinking as well. The 2700K could often reach 5Ghz in the right hands without going over 1.4v. It will probably do near ~4.5Ghz on stock volts and ~4.7Ghz with a very moderate 1.35v.do not those 2700k overclock to something like 4.7-4.8Ghz? at that speed i can only think very few games that might tax and just barely. If you can afford the 2700x then ok go for it but if budget is tight and you cant overclock the 2700k then a 2600x is equally as good gaming option but only if you overclock it to something like 4.2ghz.
To sum up no if you can overclock the 2700k like crazy, that will buy you few months till the new 7nm zen2 drops by next year and you will get better bang for you buck if you purchase in few months time.

What resolution and frequency is he gaming at?
Which will probably be 3440x1440 and at that resolution the vast majority of the load will be on the GPU. I'd be more inclined to keep the 2700k for now, what motherboard does he have?1080/60 but he wants to upgrade his monitor at Christmas to superwide
