My nephew just bought a 1080 and I’m thinking that his current system is holding it back. Do you think a Ryzen 2700x is a worthy upgrade?

do not those 2700k overclock to something like 4.7-4.8Ghz? at that speed i can only think very few games that might tax and just barely. If you can afford the 2700x then ok go for it but if budget is tight and you cant overclock the 2700k then a 2600x is equally as good gaming option but only if you overclock it to something like 4.2ghz.

To sum up no if you can overclock the 2700k like crazy, that will buy you few months till the new 7nm zen2 drops by next year and you will get better bang for you buck if you purchase in few months time.

2700x is faster by a long chalk but it all depends what resolution he will be using and the GPU. I for instance game at 4k on the rig listed below and the CPU gets a free ride as I'm 95% of the time GPU bound at 4k.

When I had my Ryzen 7 2700X it was running stock clocks and with the stock cooler ran 3950~4025MHz with normal boost enabled when all cores in use. This CPU could easily at stock settings compete with my Core i7 [email protected].

My thinking as well. The 2700K could often reach 5Ghz in the right hands without going over 1.4v. It will probably do near ~4.5Ghz on stock volts and ~4.7Ghz with a very moderate 1.35v.

What resolution and frequency is he gaming at?
