Hi,

I have an 8350 in my PC at the moment and have an I7-3770. Is the I7 much better?

Its in a Dell pre-built PC at the moment so do I just need a motherboard for it and can I use my current RAM etc and because its in a Dell PC will there be anything locking it down to that PC or can I just remove it and put it in any mobo I want?

Thanks

Yeah just pull the chip and drop it into the new board.

If you can find a Z77 board you can overclock pritty well with the i7 and get a reasonably big jump in performance.

If you are going to run stock speeds just stick with the dell board? If you are going to buy a new board go Z77 and overclock the chip and RAM.

What memory is it?

I run a 3570 Dell and a custom build 8350 atm.

Prepare yourself for a bumpy ride. Without opening the Dell box (its in the basement as a server) as I remember you will need a new PSU and new case minimum.

As for a 3770 VS a 8350, its basically a side grade.

Edit: Misunderstood, you are just keeping the CPU from the Dell and planning to use with your current setup. Don't bother, overclock the 8350, sell the Dell box, buy better GPU.

Its a gaming PC, 1440p with a Fury Nitro and online shooters

Going off the replies I'm going to keep the 8350 in the gaming PC and see if I can swap the whole 3770 CPU, mobo and PSU into another case to replace my current media PC which is a laptop

You won't be able to overclock that non-k chip so there's no reason to buy a Z board.

you can overclock the 3770 to 4.3ghz with z77 boards, just using the multi

let go of that little nugget non-k = no oc

good luck finding z77 board though, rare at reasonable prices. I sold mine on ebay for way over double what I paid for it, £42 new sold over £110. Depending on what you want it for I would consider selling the 3770, you get good money on ebay for them upto 180£ then reinvest in something new with a pick of easy to come by boards.

Edit: Ah you have a board already, in that case maybe split it all down for best money

Dell motherboards don't have the standard layouts so will require some fabrication.

Two years ago I would have agreed.

These days, cores beat HT'ing though. Stick with the 8350 and push it to 4.5 if you haven't already done so.

I recently got hold of a i7 3770 non k. Slapped it onto my z77 board and overclocker to 4.1 on all cores. The board is a ga z77 d3h and I used the auto settings. Nice upgrade from my old i5 2400, it works well and haven't had any issues. A positive side effect I noticed is that I can now overclock my ram to 1866, on my i5 I could only push it to 1600.
