I7-3770k outdated for gaming?

Iv been rocking a 3770k since late 2012 and have never had any problems and have never seen the need to overclock, but with core counts flying up iv started seeing i3 benchmarks that beat my old i7. Iv also read about games starting to utilize 8 threads, which is all i have at my disposal.
I suppose what i need to know is, will my cpu be able to handle AAA games played at max settings at 1080p in coming years or would i be smart to plan a new build now? And does anyone know a cpu that uses ddr3 that would show a noticable preformance boost over my 3770k? As id prefer not to pay for new ddr4 ram.
Heres my system incase anyones got any other advice.

This is an enthusiast forum, people on here upgrade just because they can.

That said, my personal take on it is this, are there any games that you are playing (or due to play soon) that you can't run properly ?
If the answer is yes than upgrade, if the answer is no then don't.

GFX card has far more impact on gaming anyway

I have a 3770K overclocked to 4.2Ghz with a 970GTX and still able to game happily at 4K granted turn off things like AA but you dont need that at 4K.

As MassiveJim said GPU will effect it more, there are some youtube videos where they compare older chips to new ones with GTX1080's and its alway the GPU getting maxed first

There's no modern CPU which would accept DDR3.
With good cooler overclocking of CPU could give more than few percents of extra CPU performance...
But that low end budget motherboard wouldn't be good for overclocking.
There really aren't easy/cheap ways to improve that side.

As for that easily changeable part, GPU, 1920x1080 with its low pixel count isn't very demanding, so you shouldn't be in hurry to replace it.
Especially considering current price levels/lack of good competition.

depends on the games you play , 95% of games currently will be fine on your core , 85% could run better with 6 cores . Might be best holding out to next year possibly if you really want to swap your CPU

upscale games res if your GPU isn't working hard enough at 1080p for the time being

I'm still using my 1st generation Core i7 920 yet it is the GPU that bottlenecks during gaming - although overclocked from 2.67 GHz to 3.95 GHz for audio editing purposes mainly.

Your 3770K should be more than enough for the time being IMHO. I suggest waiting a couple more years and building a new system entirely once this one goes fails at your everyday tasks.

From what i have seen is games are using 6 cores.. consoles got 8.. they have 6-7 available to them according to some devs

Scripted scenes in games will scale with extra threads but all in all 6cores should beat 8 threads

4930 & 4960x may work in your mobo..
4960x turbos higher annnd it has quad channel memory.....
But a 980? U should be fine with what u got.. just overclock it

What GPU? A modern GPU would be bottlenecked by that CPU.
Not in 4k

Should be plenty
I have an i5 4670K and even though it is overclocked, most modern games use 100% CPU now. I have the option of buying a used 47xxK i7 for £200, or sell my mobo, RAM and CPU and go Ryzen
If I had a micro ATX board for my old X58 build I would probably keep that.

OP's not going to be able to overclock his CPU on that motherboard (msi h61m e23 (b3).

Would have thought the only way to extend the use of his PC is to turn settings down in AAA games.

OP could maybe see about getting a Z77 motherboard and then overclock, but maybe better off saving for the inevitable upgrade.

These are not going to work in that motherboard.

wow. that's just bad advice.
4930 and 4960x are based on a totally different platform (ivy bridge-e)

@Nathanperry shame that you don't have a z77 board, else that 3770k will lend itself to overclocking (to stave off the inevitable upgrade further down the line)
personally, i'm running my 3770k (@4.4ghz) with a 1080ti.

the 3770k although long in the tooth, still has some life yet.
my (and by extension, your) next upgrade will have to be a full system overhaul, ie cpu+board+ram, unfortunately.
ddr4 memory is expected to be superceeded by ddr5 in the next 12-18 months

i do wonder whether is worth to wait out, and only upgrade if absolutely needed.
of course, if you are absolutely desperate to upgrade and have the spare cash lying about, then by all means :p
